An Irish traveller has taken to social media to open up about what her childhood was like.
Nicky Harty, from Dublin, revealed her upbringing wasn’t as strict as it is for other girls in her community.
The mother-of-two took to her TikTok @nickyharty20 to share a clip explaining that she was allowed to go to college and discos.
In the video, which amassed an impressive 106,000 views and nearly 8,000 likes, Nicky also admitted she was ‘torn out of bed to go to school’ every day wheres other travellers ‘parents don’t really care if they’re in school or not.’
Making an iced coffee on camera while she discussed her upbringing she said: ‘I’m back with another iced coffee video, but we have something else to add in. On TikTok I see so many people invested in the traveller community.

‘Whenever I go live, people ask ”are you a traveller?” that is the most-asked question.
‘So I thought I’d do a little rundown about my upbringing as a traveller while I make my iced coffee.
‘First of all, my parents are full Irish travellers – that makes me a full traveller, for those that ask on the daily.
‘Growing up, I literally had to be torn out of bed to go to school. I see a lot of English travellers on here, their parents don’t really care if they’re in school or not, whether that be homeschool, they would basically lean more towards that, but I was torn out of that bed.
‘I remember I was about 16 and I was still getting told off to get up and go to Youth Reach. The day I left Youth Reach was a shock because I thought my mother and father wouldn’t accept it at all.
‘Then after Youth Reach, I was allowed to go to college – a lot of traveller girls are not allowed to go onto further education, which I think is just weird. Strange sh**t.
‘Like why wouldn’t you want your child to succeed, you know?’
Nicky explained that although she was pretty much dragged to school, her parents did give her freedoms that other traveller girls weren’t allowed.

She continued: ‘When I was younger, I was allowed to go off, but I’d always have to have my phone on me and say where I am.
‘I definitely had a fun upbringing, it was strict in ways but it wasn’t strict to the point where my life was a shambles and I hated it.
‘I could do things that maybe a lot of other traveller girls couldn’t do and I thank my mother and father for the freedom that they did give me because I wouldn’t want to be one of those strict, strict parents.
‘I could have sleepovers but I would always have to bring that girl and the girl’s mother to the door and be like “yes, it’s confirmed”.
‘I also used to go to the teenager discos, that was something that I was allowed to do that I know a lot of travellers aren’t allowed.
‘But come on, we all need a bit of fun in our lives, that doesn’t make us any less of a traveller.

‘It doesn’t mean that we’re dirty or whatever, as a lot would say. In my family, we’re allowed to be with the settled community or a traveller and that’s that.’
