Lockdown is beginning to ease across the country, with many people in England starting to socialise in pub gardens and outside restaurants.
With mask-wearing still imperative as the Covid-19 pandemic continues, many may want to focus their make-up look on their eyes.
London-based celebrity make-up artist Athena Efstathiou has revealed how to style your look based on the shape of your eye and what colour will make your eyes pop.
Athena, who has worked with the likes of Vogue Williams, Pixie Lott, Binky Felstead and on music videos for artists such as Skepta, told FEMAIL the trick for perfecting your make-up is knowing what suits your face.
She said that different eye shapes and colours require slightly different techniques.
UPTURNED EYES
For upturned eyes (pictured on client Harley Shahri), Athena said you can create the on trend ‘fox eye’, by starting off adding a little shimmer to the inner corner of the eye and smoking out winged eyeliner
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Upturned eyes are oval in shape and lift up slightly at the outer edges. People with upturned eyes have a more prominent lower lid, which will appear longer than the top lid.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
Athena, who shares her work on her Instagram @goddessbeautymakeup, said that upturned eyes are one of her favourite eye shapes to work with as it’s the ‘easiest to create a variety of looks with’.
She said on upturned eyes you can create the on trend ‘fox eye’, by starting off adding a little shimmer to the inner corner of the eye, which gives the illusion of bigger eyes and helps them to pop.
Athena said: ‘I would keep the base of the lid quite light using a shimmer or a light matte nude tone.
‘Tightline the top waterline bringing the liner all the way down to the inner corner of the eye.
‘With a black/ dark brown shadow/ black liner elongate the eye by extending the liner slightly past the tear duct of the inner corner.
‘Then with the same product, from the outer third of the eye create a winged liner.’
She added that if you wanted to make the look even more sultry, you can smoke out the winged liner.
Tightlining is when you line your upper waterline with eyeliner to enhance your eyes.
ROUND EYES
Athena used the techniques for round eyes on her mother, applying a deeper brown shade into the outer third of the eye and apply a lighter shade of your choice onto the base of the lid
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Round eyes are large and look more circular than other eye shapes, while the corners of the eyes do not tilt up nor down.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
Athena said for round eyes, you can elongate the eye to give it more of an almond or lifted look.
She said: ‘The wonderful thing about round eyes is that generally there is a lot of eye space to work with.’
Start off by tightlining the upper waterline and applying a medium matte shade into the crease starting from the outer V and then repeat on the bottom of the eye to contour the eye shape.
You can then apply a deeper brown shade into the outer third of the eye and apply a lighter shade of your choice onto the base of the lid.
Athena then recommends making sure to wing out the eyeliner to elongate the eye.
MONOLID EYES
On a client who has monolid-shaped eyes, Athena used these techniques, recommending applying a medium brown shade just above the lid and taking it across to the inner corner before patting a light shade across the base of the lid
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Monolid eyes have a less obvious crease than other eye shapes.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
Athena said on monolid eyes you can create the illusion of more space and definition by ‘creating a faux crease’.
She recommends applying a medium brown shade just above the lid and taking it across to the inner corner.
The next step, Athena says, is to pat a light shade across the lid to give the illusion of more space and tightline the top waterline before curling the lashes and adding mascara.
DOWNTURNED EYE
On downturned eyes, Athena adds a light shimmer or matte shade to the inner corner and creates a winged liner by applying it thinly across the lashline and extending outwards, creating a cat eye
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Downturned eyes are oval in shape, with the outer corners turning down past the centre of the iris.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
Athena said when styling downturned eyes, or ‘doe eyes’, the aim is to lift the outer corner.
She recommends applying a light shimmer or matte shade into the inner corner and use of the lid.
Then apply a medium shade to the crease, which acts as a contour, focusing on the outer section, to give the illusion of more lid space.
Finally, add a winged liner by applying liner thinly across the lashline and extending outwards, creating a cat eye.
ALMOND EYES
On almond eyes, which her client singer Pixie Lott (pictured) has, Athena says to applying brown shades in the crease and outer v with a lighter shade of your choice across the eyelid, finishing up with a winged eyeliner to accentuate the almond shape
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Almond eyes have a smaller eyelid than some other eye shapes and are longer in width than they are round.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
The make-up artist said the almond eye is ‘the ideal eye shape’ and to start with a medium transitional shade in the crease.
She then recommends applying a slightly darker matte shade into the outer v and applying the shadow lightly to the bottom lash line.
Athena then said to apply a lighter shade of your choosing onto the base of the eye and tightline the top and bottom waterline.
Then apply a thin liner to the outer third of the lash line, creating a wing to accentuate the beautiful almond shape, before applying mascara and focusing on the outer lashes.
HOODED EYES
If you have hooded eyes and want to wear eyeliner, Athena recommends keeping it super thin and focusing it on the outer part of the eye, advising to keep the eye open when creating the liner and then close it and join the gap, which is called a bat wing liner
WHAT DEFINES THEM?
Hooded eyes are characterised by a heavy brow bone and a deep-set crease in the eyelid, which is in turn less visible.
WHAT’S THE BEST MAKE-UP?
For hooded eyes, Athena advises to create the illusion of more lid space and bigger eyes, starting by highlighting the inner corner and taking it into the inner third of the eye.
She then said to apply a light shade across the base of the lid before applying a medium shade just above the crease of the lid as a contour.
Athena then recommended tightlining the top of the eye with a brown shade and the bottom of the eye with a white or nude shade.
If you want to wear eyeliner, Athena recommends keeping it super thin and focusing on the outer part of the eye.
She advised keeping the eye open when creating the liner and then close it and join the gap – explaining that this is called a bat wing liner.
What colours work best?
Athena advised going for the opposite colour to your eye colour on the colour wheel below as a general rule of thumb.
She said that oranges and peaches make blue eyes pop while green eyes look amazing with purples, dark reds and pinks.
If you have brown eyes, blues, dark purple and green eye shadows work.
Athena advised to go for eyeshadows of the colour opposite to your eye colour
