Please Explain podcast: Megan and Harry’s dance between fame and anonymity

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced to the world last Sunday that they were expecting a second child.

In a carefully stylised photoshoot that showed the duchess resting her head in Prince Harry’s lap while holding her growing baby bump, the pair revealed their first son, Archie, would be a big brother.

The announcement bore similarities to one made by Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, who announced her pregnancy with her second child on Valentine’s Day as well.

The duke and duchess stepped back from royal duties last year to live a more independent life in the United States and to escape constant media scrutiny.

But the decision to publicly announce Meghan’s pregnancy has come under criticism as the couple are accused of courting the media for the attention they want and complaining bitterly when it is the attention they don’t desire.

Today on Please Explain, deputy lifestyle editor Sophie Aubrey joins Nathanael Cooper to explore the style and timing of the announcement of a new addition to the royal family.
