Opaque tights, puffa jackets, skipping your wax appointments…there are some things you know it’s time to shelve once the sun comes out. However, as you put your heavier clothing layers to the back of the wardrobe it might be time to do the same with your foundation. Enter the Skin Tint. Having a serious moment right now, these formulas offer super sheer, barely-there coverage that’s perfect for the warmer months. Think of them as tinted moisturiser’s more effortless, laid back sister.
"Skin tints are the sheerest base you can get, providing just a hint of colour to give you a healthy glow,’ explains MUA Jesse Walker. ‘They’re great for your summer make-up bag as they feel super lightweight and can be applied with your fingers in seconds which is what you need when you’re somewhere hot and humid".
Tints also come packed with skincare ingredients and offer extra benefits like SPF, meaning they easily earn the space in your carry-on.
Sounds like they’re only for those with perfect skin? Not at all, says Jesse. "If you want a bit more coverage then simply use them with your favourite concealer and pick a formula that’s buildable so you can up the coverage a little but still benefit from the light feel."
They’re not just for young skin either, as Jesse explains. "We sometimes think we need to go heavier as we get older but all ages can benefit from the radiance of a glow-packed base – and the less heavy the product the less chance of it sitting in fine lines."
Full disclosure, if you like your base to conceal redness or you want something that’s going to look flawless in photos (yep wedding season, we’re talking about you) then tints probably won’t hit your brief but if you’re after a dewy ‘woke up like this’ feel that nails the no-make-up make-up look then look no further.
Tempted by a tint? Here’s how to find the one that works for you.
Best for….shade range
Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint, £27 here
One criticism of skin tints is that a lot of them come in limited shade options, with a bit of a one size fits all approach which doesn’t always work for darker skin tones. This one however comes in an impressive 25 colours meaning all of us can find our match. It also gives filter-esque levels of flattery (think the Zoom blur you use to hide your laundry pile but for your face) that instantly evens out your complexion and minimises pores.
Best for…longevity
Maybelline Super Stay up to 24H Skin Tint Foundation + Vitamin C, £12.99 here

Resisting sweat and humidity, it’s at the fuller end of coverage for a skin tint and has impressive staying power that stands up to a long working day or a big night out, but still gives that natural barely there look. The added vitamin C ups the brightening effect for a boosted healthy glow.
