A young girl from Brazil who was born with two hair colours is learning to celebrate her unique look.
Two-year-old Mayah was born with piebaldism – a genetic condition that causes areas of skin or hair to appear lighter than usual. This is due to a lack of melanocytes – cells that produce melanin.
It’s a condition that runs in her family, as both her mum Talyta Youssef Aziz Vieira and her grandfather, auntie and cousins also have lighter streaks.
Mum Talyta has been encouraging her daughter to embrace her individuality – something she has previously struggled to do herself.
When she was a teenager, Talyta would hide her white streaks behind the rest of her hair and worry about being judged. However, she soon saw the beauty in her differences.
Talyta said: ‘I soon realised though that I was unique and special. I want to set that example for Mayah. People always stop us to say how special she is.’
Despite still being very young, Mayah is seeing that she looks different to everyone else but has noticed she has a similar two-tone hairstyle to Cruella De Vil.
Talyta and Mayah have even dressed up as the Disney character.
Talyta said: ‘Ever since I started posting photos of Mayah on social media, people have compared her to Cruella, Rogue from X-Men and Anna from Frozen.
‘That’s when I thought it would be a lovely idea for us to dress up together as those characters. I want Mayah to have fun memories about the way she looks.
‘I want her to embrace being a superhero.’
Talyta adds that other people with unique features have reached out to thank the pair for helping them accept themselves.
She added: ‘It’s so sad that people have hid themselves away. We don’t need to be the same to be beautiful.
‘Everyone has a heart inside to accept and love. We are living in a time of knowledge and transformation. Let’s embrace what makes us different.’
