Breathe in! Two-bed flat in one of Britain’s thinnest homes that is just 6ft wide at its narrowest point sells for £775,000
- The two-bed flat sits inside an unusually shaped block of former artist’s studios
- The block was built on land cleared to make way for the London underground
A two-bedroom apartment in one of Britain’s thinnest homes has sold for an eye-watering £775,000.
The flat sits inside an unusually-shaped block of former artist’s studios that is just 6ft wide at its narrowest point.
But the building’s unusual dimensions seem not to have deterred house hunters, with one buyer splashing out more than three-quarters of a million on it.
The apartment on Thurloe Square, South Kensington, has come to be known as the ‘thin house’ and has gained a reputation as a tourist attraction.
Each year hundreds of Instagrammers queue up outside to have their picture taken with the optical-illusion block, which is narrow at one end and then fans out to 34ft at its widest point.

The block was built on land left over after houses were demolished to make way for construction of the London Underground line running out of South Kensington tube station
The apartment has a shower room but lacks a bath – despite the £775,000 price tag
The flat covers 580sq ft of space and has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and two bathrooms
The former art studio was built on land that was left over after houses were demolished to make way for the London Underground at the end of the nineteenth century.
The government of the time stopped the Metropolitan Railway Company from building an entrance to South Kensington tube station in Thurloe Square, leaving space for the so-called Thin House.
And now flats there can go for £1m plus, with this one hitting the market at the end of 2021 for £795,000.
It took almost a year to sell but eventually did change hands for just £20,000 shy of its asking price.

The apartment’s main bedroom has an en suite bathroom with its own shower
The flat, which covers 580sq ft of floor space, is not located in the thinnest section of the unusually shaped building, as all of its walls are more than 6ft wide.
The apartment also manages to incorporate a small terrace garden as well as two bedrooms, a shower room, separate kitchen area and the first bedroom even has an en-suite.
The flat, however, comes without a bath – making it a bad choice for those who love a soak at the end of the day.
Estate agent Purple Bricks said the property offered a ‘unique opportunity’ to live in ‘a well-known local tourist attraction.’
In 2016, a one bedroom apartment-at just 600 sq ft in size-went on sale for £895,000.
And in December 2020, a flat in Thurloe Square was sold for £855,000 – or £1,261 per square foot.
