Woman murders ‘violent and abusive partner’ boyfriend after late night row

A woman has been found guilty of murdering her 'violent and abusive partner' after stabbing him 30 times.

Clare McMahon, 35, had admitted the manslaughter of John Robinson, but denied his murder.

But a jury unanimously found her guilty of murdering the 37-year-old after a trial.

She now faces a life sentence, reports Manchester Evening News .

A Manchester Crown Court murder trial heard how McMahon called 999 and told the operator 'I've stabbed him, I need the police, I need everything, he's attacked me as well'.

When paramedics arrived at their flat on Pennine Terrace in Dukinfield, they found Mr Robinson covered in blood on the balcony.

In her call to the emergency services, McMahon said that her partner had attacked her before stabbing him.

She claimed to only recall 'lunging at him once with the knife', but medical evidence showed that McMahon had inflicted 30 separate knife injuries on him.

She had picked up a knife which Mr Robinson dropped, but then went to the kitchen to get another blade, the prosecution said.

Mr Robinson sustained a 'gaping stab wound' to his neck which almost completely severed his windpipe.

He was also stabbed to the arm, near his navel, and significantly three times to his back, one of which penetrated to a depth of 12cm and cut the aorta, the largest artery in the body.

During the 'sustained and determined attack', which unfolded just after midnight on May 23, McMahon also suffered 'significant injuries' to the fingers of her right hand and also superficial cuts to her leg.

McMahon's lawyers claimed that she was suffering from 'complex post-traumatic stress disorder' when she stabbed Mr Robinson.

They said her condition 'heightened her sensitivity' to any threat during what she described as a 'violent and abusive relationship'.

Mr Robinson's family said that McMahon was aggressive to him, and that he was 'petrified' of her.

A witness who knew 'Clare and Robbo' would tell the jurors that she heard them 'having words with one another' maybe once a month, the court heard.

She had heard them arguing on their rear balcony but had never seen any physical violence, the jurors were told.

Prosecutor Francis McEntee said: "The prosecution say that whatever had initiated the fatal confrontation between the defendant and M Robinson, there is evidence of an act of cold deliberation in the middle of that confrontation.

"We say that having inflicted a life-ending injury to Mr Robinson's throat the defendant chose a further weapon to continue to deliver further devastating stab wounds."

McMahon will be sentenced on Tuesday morning.
