Loose Women star Katie Piper risked blindness while making her new series about mums in prison.
The presenter, 39, who lost the sight in one eye in a 2008 acid attack, suffered a scare with her other eye while filming.
But she bravely refused to back out of the documentary project.
Katie said: “While filming I was unfortunately going in and out of hospital because I had a problem with my eye.
“It burst and I had a hemorrhage. I’m already blind in one eye, so any other attack or injury may leave me permanently blind.
“Safety is always key within a prison environment. I know it sounds selfish, but I was worried about my own injuries, which present vulnerabilities.
“It was scary. But then I knew I had to put myself in that environment to cover this subject properly.”
Katie filmed in jails across America for the five-parter focusing on women who give birth while inside.
Doing a string of hard-hitting interviews was an emotional rollercoaster too.
Katie said: “I had many mixed emotions, to be honest. I was interested to meet the women and hear their stories.
“Often they were very tragic, devastating actually. Many of these women have been failed by the system, their families and those they trusted. I often felt guilty going back to life on the outside, and of course going back to the UK to see my own daughters and families.
“I left filming most nights feeling conflicted, bad and worried.”
Many people would write off prisoners but Katie, who was attacked with acid by evil Stefan Sylvestre said: “It is important to hold back judgment and reserve making snapshot assumptions.
“This series is a divisive topic and will make you think, but that’s the power of broadcasting.
“The viewers will all make their own opinion on these women and stories.”
Katie Piper’s Jailhouse Mums is on Wednesday at 10pm on W.
