‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Soundtrack to Feature Diana Ross, H.E.R., Phoebe Bridgers, and Other Surprising Artists

Jack Antonoff officially becomes a minion thanks to his involvement on the Minions: The Rise of Gru official soundtrack. The Bleachers singer isn’t the only artist who worked on this production, as other featured artists include Diana Ross, Tame Impala, and H.E.R.

Jack Antonoff produced ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru,’ scheduled for release on July 1, 2022

Mix Antonoff and Minions with some serious flower power, and you’ll get the Minions: The Rise of Gru official soundtrack.

This soundtrack was produced by Bleachers frontman and Grammy Award-winning musician Antonoff — one of the masterminds behind Taylor Swift’s Folklore and Lorde’s Solar Power.

This soundtrack also features an impressive and eclectic mix of artists, some covering iconic songs popularized in the 1970s.

‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ features an original song performed by Diana Ross and Tame Impala

Antonoff’s involvement aside, big-name artists lent their voices to this soundtrack. Diana Ross and the alternative rock band Tame Impala teamed up for the original song, “Turn Up the Sunshine.”

The Rise of Gru soundtrack also features Brockhampton, Caroline Polachek, Bleachers, Phoebe Bridgers, Kali Uchis, Tierra Whack, H.E.R., Brittany Howard, Thundercat, RZA, St. Vincent, and other well-known artists, putting their spin on iconic 70s hits.

“My favorite 70s songs performed by my favorite artists and an original I wrote with Sam Dew, Patrik Berger, and Kevin Parker performed by Diana Ross and Tame Impala called ‘Turn Up the Sunshine,’” Antonoff captioned one Instagram post. “Recording sessions for these were some of the most special and bizarre. Stories one day.”

It may seem like a weird pairing, but then again, so is the notorious “bad guy” Gru and his loveable minions. These Despicable Me characters return for the next chapter of their animated story. As noted in the movie’s official trailer, Minions: The Rise of Gru follows the main character as he attempts to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6.

Jack Antonoff (and other artists) revealed songs featured on ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’

Fans learned more about each artist’s involvement in the production, including who each artist will be covering. Bleachers will perform their version of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma,” while Caroline Polachek tackles Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 song “Bang Bang.”

Thundercat recorded a cover of “Fly Like an Eagle,” initially released by Steve Miller Band. “Goodbye to Love” by the Carpenters will be covered by “Motion Sickness” singer Bridgers.

RZA contributed an original song called “Kung Fu Suite.” Even the minions will appear on this soundtrack. These characters covered Simon & Garfunkel’s  “Cecilia.” Antonoff confirmed that songs would be debuting “here and there” beginning May 20.

The full Minions: The Rise of Gru soundtrack debuts on most major streaming platforms on July 1 — the same day this movie debuts in theaters. Fans can pre-order the production, which will be available for purchase physically at retailers like Target.
