One Direction split in 2015 following the exit of Zayn Malik. Since then, each of the members have gone on to create strong solo careers, with Harry Styles leading the charge as a multi-platinum-selling artist with his second album Fine Line. Payne has also enjoyed some success during his career, with hits including Strip That Down and Bedroom Floor hitting the top 20 in the UK charts.

Payne recently appeared on the FIFA Sound PlayOn Podcast where he opened up about receiving some help from British legend Robbie Williams.

He said: “We had this really interesting chat recently about coming out of a boyband and then going solo, it’s great having somebody there who’s been through all of those things.

“It’s funny that with decades between us nothing in the music industry as far as pitfalls and things that can go wrong have changed.

“They’re all the same. So he’s always been quite a big influence to me.”

Payne then went on to talk about just how influential Williams has been for him throughout his life.

He said: “I sang a lot of his songs when I was a kid and it’s kind of what started me out.

“Angels was one of the first ever songs I sang when I was younger. I got the chance to sing with him on X Factor and now he’s become a little bit of a friend which is really good.”

There are a lot of similarities between the two artists, including coming from hugely successful boybands before splitting off into solo acts.

Liam Payne discusses possibility of One Direction reunion

However, Williams famously reunited with Take That in 2010 and released a comeback album alongside them.

Currently, there has been no official word on One Direction getting back together – but the odds are in their favour.

The latest odds from Ladbrokes suggest the quartet will reunite as soon as this year.

The odds on the band getting back together in 2021 currently sit at 1/4.

Malik is not tipped to make a return alongside Styles, Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, however.

Odds on Malik making a comeback currently sit at 8/11.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes added: “The 1D lads may have all gone off and done their own thing, but a reunion wouldn’t quite feel right without all five members, and the latest odds suggest that’s exactly what Directioners may get.”

In the meantime Payne has been reminiscing about what kind of job he wanted before he joined The X Factor.

Payne first appeared on The X Factor in 2009 as a solo artist, before he was placed in One Direction by Simon Cowell.

Speaking on the same podcast, Payne said: “I feel like when I was growing up I wanted to be an archaeologist at one point.

“I thought it was going to be a bit like Indiana Jones, but it’s probably not like that every day is it? Like using a toothbrush to dig up old bones.”
