The Beatles: ‘Shy’ John Lennon made Elvis Presley ‘uncomfortable’ by staring at him

The Beatles: Get Back documentary teased by Peter Jackson

The Beatles made an enormous mark on the music industry throughout the 1960s, and into the 1970s. Songwriting duo John Lennon and Paul McCartney frequently cited Elvis Presley as one of their biggest influences in their childhood. Because of Elvis’ legacy, the Fab Four were keen to create a more rock and roll type of act, creating the unique and incredible sound that the band eventually made.

Despite the huge influences received from Elvis, the band only met him a handful of times.

And when they first met the King, they were extremely nervous about it, as revealed by Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley.

In 2014 Priscilla gave an interview about Elvis’ Graceland artefacts, which included a pool table.

This table was apparently where The Beatles and the King hung out during their first meeting in 1965.

According to Priscilla, the Fab Four arrived at Graceland for a “low key, private visit” – but that isn’t how it went.

Instead, countless fans arrived to see the historic meeting of the King of Rock n Roll, and what would become the most legendary band of all time.

Priscilla explained: “There were fans everywhere going crazy, it was a night, I think, that whole street will always remember. They don’t know what hit them I’m sure.”

Although the band weren’t exactly expecting the arrival of all these fans, they were mostly shocked by actually meeting the legendary Blue Suede Shoes singer.

Priscilla explained that, despite being enormous artists in their own right, The Beatles were extremely “shy” when meeting Elvis.

She said: “I remember [The Beatles] all being very shy and not quite knowing what to say, and of course they idolised Elvis.”

In particular, Priscilla said, John Lennon wound up gawking at the star, presumably stunned at what to say.

She continued: “I remember John [Lennon] just staring at him and looking at him and it made Elvis feel uncomfortable.”

Despite this scenario, Elvis apparently quelled all discomfort by doing what he did best.

Priscilla revealed: “Then Elvis picked up his guitar and started playing – they were just fascinated with him. It was endearing.”

As far as fans are aware, The Beatles and Elvis never worked together on any music, and only met a handful of times.

Throughout the ’60s The Beatles worked closely with other artists to create some unique music – but some of their work was written solo.

In particular, one instance saw Lennon becoming upset with McCartney when he wrote and recorded a song on his own.

Speaking to David Sheff in 1980, Lennon explained how McCartney recorded Why Don’t We Do It In The Road without the rest of the band.

He said: “That’s Paul. He even recorded it by himself in another room. That’s how it was getting in those days.

“We came in, and he’d made the whole record. Him drumming, him playing the piano, him singing. But he couldn’t… maybe he couldn’t make the break from the Beatles. I don’t know what it was, you know. I enjoyed the track.

“Still I can’t speak for George, but I was always hurt when Paul would knock something off without involving us. But that’s just the way it was then.”
