Twilight Author Stephanie Meyer Announces Release of Midnight Sun, Twitter Enters State of Chaos

This is not a drill.

Following the tumultuous pattern of the year that has been 2020, news broke this morning that author Stephanie Meyer will be releasing a new addition to her beloved Twilight series. The book, titled Midnight Sun and due out in August, is a reimagining of the original young-adult novel, but this time through the eyes of its cult-status character, vampire Edward Cullen.

Word of the latest Twilight addition originally appeared on Meyer’s personal website (which Twihards almost immediately crashed upon the news), but the author also appeared on Good Morning America to confirm the surprise. The author first shared that she had begun working on the retelling more than a decade ago, but needed to take a pause following the aftermath of the wildly popular book series, as well as its accompanying five blockbuster films.

“It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure if this was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so, so long. It didn’t seem fair to make you wait anymore. Sorry about the bad timing. Hopefully this book can be a distraction from the real world,” said Meyer during her virtual appearance on the morning talk show.

The resurrection of the beloved teen series quickly sent Twitter into shambles, with Twihards from all walks of life expressing their elation over the nostalgic news. Below, we’ve rounded up hilarious takes on the announcement of Midnight Sun—and please excuse us as we dig out our vintage Team Edward baby tee.
