As the iconic spy drama Killing Eve returns for its fourth and final season, we find Villanelle and Eve in very different places.
Now, it’s Eve who’s out for blood, as she sets out on a revenge mission against The Twelve, while Villanelle is out to prove she’s not a monster, leading her to make a most unlikely move…
And we can reveal we find the legendary assassin in a rather unusual setting.
“We see her in a church community,” says Jodie Comer, who plays her. “She’s done with working for The Twelve and them owning her, so she’s trying to find her freedom.”
And in finding that freedom, Jodie reveals she’s had to lose her trademark stylish outfits.
“She’s been in the church, and she doesn’t have the money any more,” Jodie explains. “And she’s trying to step into a new version of herself. So there are some very questionable fleeces, socks with sandals, shorts. It’ll be a real treat for the viewers.”
Eve, meanwhile, is hell-bent on revenge, and doesn’t hesitate in tracking down a lead when they come to light…
“We see that Eve’s come through into a place of decisiveness and action,” says Sandra Oh, who plays her. “She’s not scared of it any more and she’s moving towards it.”
The show is famous for its beautiful international locations, but with Covid restricting travel, the producers have had to be inventive.
“There’s a whole section where we go to Cuba, but it’s Margate,” reveals Sandra.
“We had a lot of inventiveness and pushing the production creatively.”
But it turns out the good old English seaside can be just as fun as Latin America.
“We’d had fish and chips, and we found this tiny little bar that was like a broom cupboard with live music,” says Jodie. “It was our first time seeing live music for a while, so it was a really magical experience.”
Of course, filming the final series means there were mixed emotions all around.
“It was bittersweet,” admits Jodie. “It’s a bold decision to say, ‘This is it.’”
“I hope the fans enjoy the way that we’ve brought Eve and Villanelle to a close,” adds Sandra.
This season sees two new assassins on the prowl, Pam (Anjana Vasan) and Gunn (Marie-Sophie Ferdane).

"Pam comes in fairly early on in the season,” says Sandra Oh. “She’s a fairly mysterious character, an outsider who wants in. Eve comes into her place of work and catches her out on something. Later they’re basically all in the same soup together.”
Meanwhile, Gunn is an assassin who’s been trained in a very similar mode to Villanelle.
“It’s the first time she’s faced somebody who’s got a background like hers,” explains producer Sally Woodward Gentle. “So when Villanelle comes into her world and she sees somebody who mirrors her, it’s a recipe for a very tumultuous relationship.”
Killing Eve is on BBC iPlayer from 28 February and returns to BBC One on Saturday 5 March.
