American Idol star quits after Katy Perry ‘mom-shaming’

American Idol: Katy Perry fake faints to mother of three

The American Idol contestant and mother of three took to TikTok recently to hit back at the judge’s “mom-shaming” comments made before wowing the panel with her audition. However, Katy Perry and her co-stars were stunned on Sunday night’s episode of the ABC competition when Sara Beth Liebe voluntarily pulled out of the running.

The 25-year-old mother and singer confirmed she would be returning to her children after her final performance last Sunday.

The TikTok singer made it through the auditions and into the 21st season of American Idol’s first round of Hollywood Week shows but pulled out after her first performance.

Liebe impressed the crowd with her rendition of Roxanne by the Police, but judges Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were shocked when she made the announcement.

“This opportunity is really rad, but this is actually going to be my last performance, because my heart’s at home,” she began.

“So, I’m going to get home to my babies. They kind of need me.”

The panelists were all disappointed with her decision and pleaded with her to reconsider.

Bryan said the decision would be a “mistake”, and Perry also urged her to change her mind, but Liebe’s mind was made up.

“I don’t even know what show business is,” she continued.

“I’ve been a mom since I was 18. I’ve been married since I was 18… I don’t think I realised quite how hard it would be to be away from my kids.”

The singer explained her unexpected decision further when she spoke to one of the show’s producers backstage.

“They’re all still really young,” she said. “There is a lot of guilt when you leave your kids to do something completely selfish.

“I feel like I’m not gonna win the show anyway, so I might as well go home.”

Liebe admitted she may not have been one of the favourites to win this year, though she still has a considerable following thanks to her presence on TikTok.

She recently used the social media platform to address Perry’s gobsmacked reaction to finding out she was a mother of three at the age of 25.

“Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much,” the pop star cracked during her audition, and also pretended to faint when Liebe made the revelation.

“It was hurtful and that’s that,” she said in her TikTok post.

“I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom shaming is super lame and I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”

Thankfully, this won’t be the last fans see of her, as Liebe recently confirmed her new original single Bruises will soon be available.

She also appears to have reconciled with Perry as her latest posts suggest the pop star’s comments are water under the bridge.

“Can we talk about how gooooood Katy looked in that shade of purple…?” she said in another TikTok.

American Idol season 21 continues Sundays and Mondays on ABC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
