BBC Breakfast fans fume as local news segment disappears in major show shakeup

BBC Breakfast fans were left fuming – and rather baffled – on Tuesday morning, as one segment of the show appeared to have been axed entirely.

Though hosts Jon Kay and Louise Minchin appeared on the red sofa to discuss the issues of the day – including A-level results day, virtual learning in universities and the Olympics – one segment was blatantly missing.

The local news segment, which the studio usually cuts to at certain points during the programme, was absent on Tuesday.

Viewers usually get the local news delivered to their telly screens depending on where they live in the country, with a different presenter to deliver each.

Fans watching on BBC iPlayer, meanwhile, receive the local London news.

Fuming viewers swarmed to social media to comment on the missing news, with one writing: "So you've axed the local news and weather reports? No point in me watching then. Cheerio!"

"#BBCBreakfast what have you done to the format? Why is Carol on at 7.30? Where is my local news? Will be turning into something else if it stays like this! NOT GOOD. Love Carol but not happy with the changes!" another fumed.

Someone else ranted: "@BBCBreakfast what's happened to local news and weather since you've come back from Olympics? Missing it!"

"@BBCBreakfast can we please have local news, travel and weather back? Thanks!" someone else begged, as a fifth fan moaned: "No local news again on @BBCBreakfast this morning. When will you be returning? Local news, weather and travel is relevant to so many of us."

Daily Star has contacted the BBC for comment.

It comes as another huge shakeup disrupted the usual proceedings of the show, with presenter Dan Walker missing from the red sofa and replaced by Jon Kay.

The show had been replaced by an Olympic Breakfast special, presented by Dan alongside Sam Quek, and discussing the latest happenings in Tokyo.

But, with the Olympics drawing to a close, it was down to Louise and Jon to take up the torch once more to present the news of the day.

That didn't stop an army of fans turning out in support of Dan on Monday, with one posting: "Woke up this morning tired and bleary-eyed and couldn't wait to see @mrdanwalker and @SamanthaQuek on Olympic Breakfast… then I realised. Just a 3 year wait."

Another said: "It ain’t the same without the Olympics and @mrdanwalker @SamanthaQuek on BBC 1."

"The Olympics ending is sad. Last 2 weeks was full of great moments and positivity," a third penned.
