Coleen Nolan backs Jesy Nelson quitting Little Mix: ‘When I knew her, she was struggling’

Jesy Nelson: Coleen Nolan discusses decision to leave Little Mix

Little Mix fans were gutted after Jesy Nelson confirmed she would be leaving her position in the much-loved girl group after nearly 10 years. It came just weeks after it was confirmed Jesy would be taking a break from the band. On today’s edition of Loose Women, Coleen Nolan – whose son Jake Roche was previously in a relationship with Jesy – opened up her own pressures being part of a girl group and said of the star: “When I knew her, she was struggling with it all.”

Jesy released a statement on Monday afternoon explaining to fans she had left the girl group behind.

Remaining bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall gave their own statement and showed their support of Jesy’s decision.

Jesy told fans: “The truth is recently being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health.

“I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.

“There comes a time in life when we need to reinvest in taking care of ourselves rather than focusing on making other people happy, and I feel like now is the time to begin that process.

“So after much consideration and with a heavy heart, I’m announcing I’m leaving Little Mix.”

She continued: “I need to spend some time with the people I love, doing things that make me happy. I’m ready to embark on a new chapter in my life – I’m not sure what it’s going to look like right now, but I hope you’ll still be there to support me.”

Today, Coleen gave her thoughts on the singer’s choice to quit the band and gave some insight into her own experience of being in a girl band.

Fans of the singer will know Jesy was once dating Coleen’s son Jake back in the mid-2010s.

Rixton star Jake proposed to the singer back in 2015 but the pair broke off their engagement the following year.

Speaking of Jesy’s decision, she said: “From knowing Jesy in the past, I’ve not seen her for a few years now, but when I knew her she was struggling with it all.

“As someone who likes her so much she has made the right decision for her.

“I think it’s the right decision for her mental health and I wish her all the best. I think it’s a hard but brave decision,” she noted.

It came moments after Coleen had spoken about her time in The Nolans, a journey which she began when she was very young.

Coleen said: “I’ve got feelings for Jesy because I’ve known for very well. I totally get it.

“I was in a girl band and was with family, so you always felt protected. The pressure then, I was 15 when I joined, was hard but it was just like a critic in a newspaper.”

And comparing Jesy’s experiences to her own, she continued: “It wasn’t in your face 24/7 on social media.

“Equally, when someone that young goes from not being known at all to being on the biggest talent show in the country and instantly being thrust into the spotlight and trolled, the criticism must be immense,” Coleen said.

The other panellists also expressed their support with host Andrea McLean wishing her “lots of love and luck.”

Leigh-Anne, Perrie and Jade will continue the girl band as a three and will go on to tour their latest album ‘Confetti’ in 2021.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
