Gail (played by Helen Worth) has been a pinnacle of the Coronation Street community for the best part of four and a half decades. In that time, she has evaded death on several occasions but some of her husbands and neighbours haven’t been so lucky. In scenes airing on the ITV soap next week, the matriarch of the Platt family is struck down unexpectedly with a heart attack and it seems her time could be running out.

The drama begins when her eldest son, Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), is continuing to have problems with the mother of his son, Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac).

Having given the hairdresser and his child their marching orders in recent scenes, the father-of-one will have a change of heart.

He is devastated, however, when his former lover refuses to let him see his son, Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan), but Gail is still allowed access.

This plants a seed in troublemaker David Platt’s (Jack P Shepherd) head and he puts pressure on his mother to let Nick see the youngster.

Not wanting to disrespect Natasha’s wishes, the stalwart tells her children she will not be breaking the rules.

Furious at not being able to see Sam, Nick makes a rash and impulsive decision about his future on the cobbles.

The businessman tells his sister, Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) he wants to sell his shares in the Underworld Factory.

This would free up his time to spend with his partner, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) following the horror the last year has been for her.

Feeling downhearted, Nick is pleased to finally have a meeting with his son as David dupes their mother into letting it happen.

Angry for being used as a pawn, the stalwart clashes with her children for not respecting the way she wanted to deal with the situation.

Feeling extremely flustered, Gail heads outside for some fresh air and to take a break from the arguments.

However, when Sam ventures outside to check on his grandmother, the youngster witnesses the pensioner having a heart attack.

Doubled up in pain and clutching at her chest, there are no disparities over the illness the stalwart is suffering from.

As an ambulance is called, the matriarch of the Platt family blames her three children for causing the attack.

With their constant bickering, they’ve driven their mother to her wit’s end and it’s not long before she’s in hospital receiving extensive medical care.

You do get nervous

It’s not been revealed if Gail will survive the heart attack but if she doesn’t, the cobbles will be losing a stoic character from their community.

Gail’s death would cause a huge rift within the family as all three of her children would point the finger of blame at each other.

They might not see it at first, but their respective partners could rally around to make them see they all had a part to play.

Given the harsh reality of their situation, the trio could agree to argue less in the future and be happy, just as their mother would have wanted.

Or will Gail survive and teach her children a very hard lesson on why they need to be there for one another, rather than becoming enemies?

The actress who plays Gail, Helen, 70, has previously spoken out on leaving the show when EastEnders boss Kate Oates was appointed executive producer of the ITV soap.

Helen said: “You do get nervous. It’s new beginnings. You’re in their hands.

“You just keep your fingers crossed and hope they want the character to continue,” the actress told The Daily Star.

“In real life, there are older people. So they have to be represented on the show. In fact, they are a very important part of our programme.

“So I’ve no idea how long I’ll be on the show,” she added.

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 9pm on ITV.
