Dame Barbara Windsor has shared a truly heartwarming festive video message for Good Morning Britain viewers as she continues her Alzheimer’s battle.
Sat alongside her husband Scott Mitchell, who shared an update on the actress’s health and insisted that she’s still got a ‘sparkle’ about her, the EastEnders legend said: ‘Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the viewers and everyone at Good Morning Britain from us and everyone at Alzheimer’s Society.’
Later joining Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins, Scott revealed: ‘Babara is doing okay, thank you. As we always say, it’s a progressive illness so you always expect things to get a little bit worse as you go along, but she’s still got that lovely sense of fun within her.’
Although Barbara was diagnosed with the degenerative brain condition in 2014, the 82-year-old is still battling to keep ahold of her humerous side, and Scott continued: ‘She still loves to sit there and giggle and I make her laugh and she makes me laugh.’
‘She’s still got that sparkle,’ commented Ben.
Scott replied: ‘She really has, but obviously the confusion is very unsettling for her.’
Addressing whether their loved ones have been paying visits, Scott revealed: ‘We’ve been really fortunate, we’ve had some really consistent friends and family who’ve been there since we went public with it.’
But he added that ‘there is a sense of groundhog day’ when it comes to caring for the actress.
Last month it was revealed that EastEnders will pay tribute to the soap legend by naming Louise Mitchell’s baby Peggy.
Babs was left ‘quite emotional’ after hearing the news, with Scott telling The Sun: ‘She thought what a lovely thing it is Peggy Mitchell will live on in a family member. What a lovely tribute.
‘It made her quite emotional and I have been reminding her each time we watch the show every night. Each time her whole face lights up.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
