Emmerdale spoilers: Charity Dingle abandons Vanessa in her time of need after big clue?

Charity Dingle (played by Emma Atkins) was rocked to the core tonight when fiancé Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) sat her down and told her the truth about her health. However, Emmerdale viewers were convinced Charity’s behaviour is foreshadowing an upcoming storyline detail.

While being held captive by Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather), the extent of Vanessa’s health concerns were revealed; she had bowel cancer.

After weeks of burying her head in the sand, Charity realised it was time to face up to reality and confide in Charity.

“Bowel cancer?” Charity whispered in disbelief and Vanessa reassured: “I know it’s a lot to take in.”

“Just a bit. How did this creep up on us?” The Woolpack landlady asked.

“There were signs. I just didn’t put two and two together until I got the facts,” the vet explained.

Charity then asked the question fans were dreading: “How bad is it?”

“It’s too early to say,” Vanessa explained noticing the shocked look on Charity’s face. “Hey it’s alright to ask me questions, anything at all.”

“Babe, I don’t really know what to say, it’s not everyday your fiancé tells you she’s dying!” Charity remarked.

Realising she had been tactless, Charity apologised but Vanessa interrupted: “Let’s not talk like that just yet.

“I’m sorry, my head’s spinning,” Charity excused and Vanessa added: “Yes, mine was too on the day I found out.”

Worried, Vanessa asked: “Charity, please tell me we can beat this?” And after seconds of silence, Charity said a little too enthusiastically: “Yes! Of course we can! And I’ll be there every step of the way.”

This heartbreaking scene was hard for viewers to watch, and many took to Twitter to discuss how Charity reacted about the news.

“Leaving her already Charity  #Emmerdale,” a fan remarked in reference to Charity abruptly leaving the house to go to work.

As for how this storyline is going to play out, the actress who plays Vanessa spoke about her new challenge.

This is such a challenging storyline, but we’ve been working closely with Bowel Cancer UK, who have been enormously helpful to me in researching Vanessa’s symptoms and treatment. I hope to do Vanessa’s story justice.

“I was actually really shocked to learn that bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer, but diagnosed early is treatable.”

If you or anyone you know has been affected by Vanessa’s storyline, please visit Bowel Cancer UK’s website here for help and advice.

Emmerdale airs weekday evenings at 7pm on ITV.
