Emmerdale’s Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) has been a pillar of support for Liam Cavanagh (Johnny McPherson) since he discovered that Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) murdered his daughter Leanna (Mimi Slinger).
But the ITV soap’s bosses have now hinted that Leyla could be secretly struggling in light of the Meena reveal – a storyline that will be explored further in the coming months as the fallout from Meena’s crimes continue.
Speaking to OK! and other press outlets the show’s Executive Producers Laura Shaw and Jane Hudson teased what characters will be front and centre of the programme in 2022, pinpointing Leyla as one to watch.
Laura Shaw explained: “Leyla has a big storyline coming up in 2022. We've seen her be a huge support to Liam through the loss of his daughter Leanna but is all as it seems?”
She continued: “Is Leyla really coping as well as she seems to on the surface, or is there a bit more going on there that we'll uncover?”
While Laura continued to keep specific plotlines under wraps, it’s clearly set to be a tumultuous time for Leyla. What impact could this have on her marriage to Liam?
There’s also plenty more storylines to keep viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the rest of the year.
In fact, the soap bosses have confirmed there will be not one, but three weddings in the Dales in 2022.
Laura revealed: “Well, it wouldn't be a normal soap year without a few births, deaths and marriages.”
She continued: “We've already seen Billy (Fletcher, played by Jay Kontzle) and Dawn (Taylor, played by Olivia Bromley) get engaged on screen.”
“I don’t think I’m giving too much away if I tell you that their wedding definitely will happen this year.”
“And it will happen on the most romantic day of the year on Valentine's Day, so not too long to wait for their wedding.”
“But will it all go to plan? Is it going to be happy ever after for these two or will disaster strike? I suspect it's probably the latter…”

Jane went on to hint at details of one of the other two weddings. She said: “There may be a wedding in the summer. Which we'll have to wait and see. You might not guess who that is right now.”
While Laura added: “We've also got another wedding coming up – a third one – and that's a bit more of an unexpected twist.”
“I think that's going to shock quite a few of our villagers and ruffle a few feathers. That is for later in the year.”
