Everything you need to know about June Brown's husband and kids

EastEnders star June Brown has died aged 95 – leaving behind a long legacy after playing the beloved Dot Cotton between 1985 and 2020.

In the soap, Brown’s iconic character, Dot, was married to Jim Branning (John Bardon), and their relationship was a firm fan-favourite.

But who was June Brown married to in real life, and did they have children?

Here is everything you need to know.

Was June Brown married?

Yes, June Brown was actually married twice.

Her first marriage, which started in 1950, was with John Garley, a fellow Old Vic company member. They were married for seven years, until he died in 1957, when Brown was 30.

Brown previously opened up about her first husband’s death, saying in her memoir Before The Year Dot that she ‘felt guilty’ after he took his own life.

In 1958, Brown married actor Robert Arnold. Arnold starred in the BBC series Dixon of Dock Green, and had roles in Fawlty Towers, Blake’s 7, and Dial M for Murder.

They were married for 45 years, until Arnold died in 2003 of Lewy Body dementia.

Did June Brown have children?

June Brown had five children with Robert Arnold, one of whom, a daughter named Chloe, died at two weeks old.

Their next daughter was named Chloe after her, with their three other daughters named Louise, Naomi and Sophie.

They also have a son named William, who works as a compliance consultant.

In 2017, Brown underwent eye surgery to save her sight, after she became unable to read EastEnders’ scripts and make out the faces of her family.

After successful treatment she revealed: ‘I can see people’s faces, I can recognise my children again.’

June Brown also leaves behind six grandchildren.

Announcing her death on April 4, a statement from Brown’s family read: ‘We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side.

‘We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.’
