The Good Morning Britain panel couldn’t help but laugh as they announced their ex-co-star Piers Morgan has been nominated at this year’s National Television Awards.

Piers made the shortlist for best television presenter despite quitting the ITV daytime programme in March after making comments about the Duchess of Sussex.

‘It rings a bell, the name,’ said Daily Mirror newspaper editor Kevin Maguire. ‘Who is that?’

‘Is that some guy who used to work here?’ added fellow guest Amanda Platell, much to the delight of Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins who were consumed with laughter.

‘I remember when Good Morning Britain was nominated, it must have been two years ago, and he didn’t win and he was very cross,’ Kate said. ‘So we’ll see if he comes this time and see if he wins.’

‘He’s permanently cross,’ Kevin joked, causing an eruption of giggles.

Dr Hilary Jones added: ‘Ironic if we wins it when he’s off-air!’

We wonder what Piers will have to say about this…

Piers will compete against Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, Bradley Walsh and This Morning stars Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond for the TV presenter prize at the NTAs.

The awards ceremony will see all three stars of Line Of Duty vie for the drama performance gong.

Adrian Dunbar (Ted Hastings), Martin Compston (Steve Arnott) and Vicky McClure (Kate Fleming) are all in the running, alongside Olly Alexander for Channel 4 series It’s A Sin and David Tennant for Des.

Des and It’s A Sin are also nominated for the best new drama award, alongside Netflix’s raunchy period drama Bridgerton and the hit adaptation of the book Normal People.

Michaela Coel’s powerful series I May Destroy You, which recently won two Baftas and did feature on the longlist, was not shortlisted.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
