Good News, We're Officially Getting a 'Princess Switch 3'

In 2018’s The Princess Switch, Vanessa Hudgens played two characters. In 2020’s The Princess Switch: Switched Again, Vanessa Hudgens plays three characters. In 2020-something’s The Princess Switch: We’ve Lost Track, Vanessa Hudgens plays four characters. Jk! Sorry, that’s not what’s actually happening, and that’s not what the sequel is really called. There will be a Princess Switch 3, and here’s what we know about it so far.

Vanessa isn’t up for scrambling her brain even further.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hudgens was asked about a third movie and made a suspicious face, before acknowledging that, yes, Duchess Margaret and Chicago baker Stacy will be hitting Netflix once again. “Nothing has been filmed yet, but, you know, we gotta keep the Christmas spirit alive,” the 31-year-old actor said.

The natural next question was whether she’d play four characters in the third film since she plays three in this year’s sequel. In addition to Margaret and Stacy, Hudgens plays Lady Fiona, who also looks inexplicably exactly like them. Fiona is Margaret’s party girl cousin who tries to switch her way to the throne Margaret is set to inherit.

“No, god, no. I’m just going to crush that rumor now,” Hudgens said of adding a fourth role. “That is not happening. No one get their hopes up for that.”

So when can we expect the next movie!?

Netflix previously confirmed that a third movie was coming, as reported by Variety. Production is planned to begin in Scotland and the movie is set for a 2021 release.

For now, Christmas movie fans can check out The Prince Switch: Switched Again when it premieres on Netflix November 19. In addition to the drama caused by Fiona pretending to be Margaret and Margaret pretending to be Stacy, there will also be romance, of course. Stacy tries to rekindle the relationship between Margaret and her friend/baking competition partner Kevin (Nick Sagar). There’s also a royal love interest, Antonio (Lachlan Nieboer), who stirs things up.

Hudgens told Entertainment Weekly that filming her three parts was “fun, challenging, and would totally mess with my head and everyone else’s. Figuring out the shot list describing what we were filming was so confusing.” Maybe with the third Princess Switch movie, she’ll be back to playing just two roles and get to have the totally not stressful job of just playing all of her scenes against one other version of herself.
