With less than a month to go before the current instalment of wildly popular hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy comes to an end, ABC has shocked some viewers by ordering yet another season. Reactions have poured in on Twitter, with casual and devoted fans alike suggesting the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital should start to close its doors.

Confirmation of an 18th season of ABC’s staple medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has been met with divided reactions from viewers.

The network officially confirmed the new season was in the works on Monday, May 10, along with a fifth season of spin-off Station 19 due to arrive later this year.

Leading star Ellen Pompeo is also confirmed to return to the series after signing a new deal with ABC.

Two of the series’ original stars, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have also signed on for the new season.

Grey’s renewal arrives shortly after it was announced that Jackson Avery star Jesse Williams would be departing in the next episode of season 17, ‘Tradition’.

The latest instalment also featured the return of Sarah Drew as April Kepner in order to wrap up the pair’s ongoing romance.

Having delivered one of the most talked about slates of episodes in recent memory, many Grey’s Anatomy fans were convinced the series was due to end on a high.

While a handful viewers were overjoyed by the news, the reactions on social media were decidedly mixed.

One Twitter user said: “They renewed Greys Anatomy. I….don’t know what to say anymore.”

Another incredulous fan posted: “LOL. I will never get it. It was the perfect season to end!”

Long-standing lead Ellen Pompeo has been notoriously evasive when pressed on her plans to eventually leave Grey’s Anatomy, which would effectively bring the series to a close.

After contracting COVID-19 in the latest season, Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is currently drifting in and out of consciousness and encountering loved ones in an ambiguous afterlife.

Her upcoming death or recovery would bring the series to a suitable conclusion, though it appears Meredith has a little more fight in her than previously speculated.

A third disappointed viewer tweeted: “As much as I love Grey’s, and it’s a LOT of love, I was ready to say goodbye this year.

“It would have been the perfect series finale with this season.”

Despite the latest positive news for the series, other fans are still predicting season 18 will be marketed as Grey’s last once it goes into production.

One Redditor suggested: “I definitely think it’ll be the last season, and it should end with the 400th episode.

“It also needs to take place in a post covid and post vaccine world.”

Some fans have already been divided by season 17 taking place in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, so the series could definitely benefit from one more post-COVID outing.

However, Pompeo revealed back in March that she still isn’t sure what the future holds for Grey’s Anatomy, so there’s still a chance for the series to continue well past season 18.

Grey’s Anatomy season 17 continues Thursday, May 20 on ABC.
