The production of the original Star Wars trilogy has become legendary, with countless stories surfacing from the development of those iconic three movies. Rumours were flying around about a potential affair, one that Harrison Ford denied even when he was confronted by Luke Skywalker star Mark Hamill. Partying was also a regular occurrence off the set, with a particularly infamous evening being shared with The Rolling Stones. The following day, the Han Solo star returned to film some famous scenes still drunk from the night before.
Harrison Ford began an affair with Carrie Fisher when the young actress was just 19 years old. It all started when the 35-year-old began kissing her in the back of a car. Despite the fact he was married at the time, she gave in to his advances.
The Indiana Jones star wasn’t looking for a serious relationship, but it didn’t stop Fisher from fantasising about him leaving his wife for her, according to her memoir The Princess Diarist.
The relationship was ultimately short-lived, though Fisher noted a potentially game-changing moment of their affair. One day Ford did an impression of her, something he wasn’t known for doing. She hoped it would make him realise he wanted to marry her.
During a 2016 interview with Today, Fisher admitted the relationship was mostly sexual, calling it a “three-month one-night stand.” Despite feeling guilty about it, she added: “I wasn’t raised that way but when you’re on location — this is something I discovered — everything is permitted.”
One of the biggest nights for the pair was when she was invited to a party with The Rolling Stones. Speaking to The Daily Beast in 2015, the actress cleared some of the rumours regarding the chaotic evening.
She said: “Yes, that one’s true … I was renting Eric Idle’s house for five months, and he was doing Monty Python down in Tunisia, and they had a drink that they would give to the extras to make them more compliant. And they called it the Tunisian Death Drink.”
She said that she received a call from Idle, with him saying: “The Rolling Stones are here,” so she rushed out to discover that all of the band members were in fact present. Soon after, she called Ford to join.
She explained: “I called Harrison and said, ‘Get over here! This is ridiculous.”
The pair decided to avoid falling asleep in a bid to hold off a hangover. The results led to Ford and Fisher filming scenes while still drunk on The Empire Strikes Back. This took place when they were filming the sequences on Cloud City, the famous floating fortress that featured the iconic line from Darth Vader: “No, I am your Father.”
Fisher said that you could tell they were drunk during these moments, explaining: “We don’t really smile a lot in the movie, but there we’re smiling.”
Other unintentional mishaps came when the pair fed each other lines on set. According to Entertainment IE, there is a scene in The Millennium Falcon where Ford is visibly mouth-prompting Fisher her dialogue. Apparently, the director of the film, Irvin Kirshner, was threatening to fire her from the set if she didn’t get her lines right.
Another source of speculation is Fisher’s cocaine finger during a scene in Return of the Jedi. The star has denied this claim, but fans continue to point out one nail that is longer than the rest.
