House of the Dragon faces major change as 4 stars replaced in upcoming episodes

Following the plot's time leap, four major roles in the Game of Thrones spin-off House of The Dragon are set to be replaced despite only being two episodes in.

The show, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, follows the trials and tribulations of the Targaryen house which will eventually lead to the infamous Targaryen civil war.

Matt Smith has taken on the role of the cunning Daemon Targaryen, brother to Paddy Considine, the troubled King Viserys on the hunt for a new heir and Milly Alcock as fiery, dragon-riding Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

However, following a time leap, Alcock is set to be replaced by actress Emma D'Arcy, known for her appearances in Truth Seekers and Mothering Sunday.

Emma will take on the role of the white-haired princess who is the current air following the quick death of her baby brother.

Princess Rhaenyra's best pal and now-stepmother Alicent Hightower is played by Emily Carey at the moment but will be replaced by Olivia Cooke as the plot skips forward in time.

The actors playing the young cousins of Rhaenyra, Laena Velaryon and Laenor Velaryon will be replaced by Nanna Blondell and John MacMillan by episode five.

Co-creator Ryan Condal revealed the child cast shake-up was agreed early on and despite being a "conceit" it works for the show.

He said: "It's a conceit but I think it does work, having watched it a bunch of times.

"The people that are truly children in this are the ones that get recast. And the people that are already adults when we meet them, we age them up through hair and makeup and sometimes the actors change their voice," Ryan continued.

Speaking cryptically of their upcoming appearances on the show, Milly and Emily told LadBible: "We don't know what we can and can't say, but we didn't work with Liv [Olivia Cooke] and Em [Emma D’Arcy] at all.”

House of the Dragon continues on Sky Atlantic next Monday night, 5 September, at 9.00pm and On Demand from 2.00am on Sunday.
