Celebrity MasterChef concluded this week with John Torode and Gregg Wallace and the final eight contestants pushed themselves to the absolute limit. However, when Sam Quek explained she was making salt and pepper chips to go with her Chinese inspired takeaway, John was horrified by the “odd” combination.

The stakes were high on Celebrity MasterChef and this year there were a lot of competitive stars in the race to lift the trophy.

Tom Skinner, Judi Love, Gethin Jones, Riyadh Khalaf, Matthew Pinsent went up against the likes of Sam Quek, Phil Daniels and Amar Latif this week as the show edges closer to that final.

One contestant in particular though, who was proved a strong competitor, left judge John baffled though.

During a challenge in which the celebrities had to create their on takeaways, contestant Sam said she was very nervous.

She said: “When you don’t know what is coming, that is very scary.

“So I am very nervous and I feel sick. Things are getting serious.”

When the judges came over Sam explained: “If I have got time I am going to make some salt and pepper chips to go with my Chinese inspired takeaway.

“You know like at the end of the Chinese menu? You have the random English stuff like an omelette.

“So I might throw some salt and pepper chips in there too,” she added.

Backstage John said: “Sam is playing to her strengths, she is making wonton soup.

“What is important here is that you have a very, very strong broth.

“It needs to be flavoured with chicken, usually with mushrooms and it should really sing and dance on the tongue.

“However, the first time in the world I ever heard about eating chips in a Chinese restaurant when I came to Britain.

“It is the oddest thing in the whole world,” John continued.

When it came to judging, John and Gregg were bowled over by the work and amount of flavour Sam had managed to pack into her dish.

John, however, was not taken by the “odd” combination especially as Sam hadn’t managed to cook her chips well enough, but he said the rest of it was “fab-tastic”.

Fans were thrilled with Sam’s dish though and took to Twitter to discuss.

One said: “Sam! That looks amazing! #MasterChef.”

Another added: “I think this is her best dish yet on #MasterChef I would eat that now.”

A third added: “Chips are a Chinese staple in this house. Looks yum! #MasterChef”
