Kate Garraway appeared on Friday’s Lorraine alongside her co-star Ben Shephard, where she gave an update on Derek’s health. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who has openly discussed Derek’s illness, explained his recovery has been “a long battle”.
“It’s a long onslaught,” she said as Lorraine replied: “Of course it is.”
Kate continued: “It’s a long onslaught and I can see, you know, he has better days, he has worse days.
“He’s thankfully at home now, but it’s been a long battle to get him back home again.
“I think it’s very tough on him and it’s very tough on the people around me actually.”
“I mean, all jokes aside, Ben for all his unbelievable cheek has been extraordinary,” she said.
“I can’t help but think of you Lorraine and all the people around me at GMB and through the radio as well.
“You must be fed up to the back teeth and that is the problem I think, if you are caring or if you have a long-term situation.”
In March 2020, Kate’s husband was put into a coma after suffering complications from coronavirus.
He spent more than a year confined to hospital, before finally being allowed home to be with his family.
Despite pulling through, Kate admitted life hasn’t been the same for their family.
Derek has also faced other health complications and earlier this year, he returned to the hospital after contracting sepsis.
At the time, Kate explained it was “very touch and go” as Derek fought the life-threatening illness.
In October, Kate won a National Television Award for her documentary about family life and Derek.
However, the victory was a bittersweet moment for the mum-of-two.
Speaking at the event, Kate said: “It’s bittersweet because you wouldn’t really want to be in a position to be making that documentary.
“It wouldn’t be a situation that you would choose.”
She added to PA: “There were many nights when we feared Derek will be taken from us completely.
“The fact that he fights on so incredibly, and we have the chance to care for him, is a fantastic thing.
“To have the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work carers do, the professional carers, the millions of unpaid carers all across the country that are looking after loved ones, I think it’s a fantastic thing.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
