Much has been made of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with its Eternals and its Black Widow movie, and especially its Natalie Portman version of Thor coming soon in Thor: Love and Thunder. We know that Marvel very carefully plans their movies out, and that’s why the original version of the Avengers was such a success. The studio had a vision and they saw it through. What we didn’t know is that they’ve planned so far ahead, they were almost ready to announce Phase Five.
What we know about Phase 5
If Phase Four of the MCU means they movies coming in 2020 and 2021, then we know a little bit about Phase Five. We know that Blade starring Mahershala Ali will be coming at some point, just as we knew a third Guardians of the Galaxy was coming because there was so much to-do about whether James Gunn will direct it or not.
Ali, who won Best Supporting Actor Oscars for Moonlight and Green Book, will play the vampire hunter who succeeds partly because he has vampire blood in him but can still stand the sunlight. Marvel did not say when their version of Blade is coming out, but we can only assume it won’t be until at least 2022.
However, things can change. Marvel has only two films on its schedule next year: Black Widow in May and The Eternals in November. The studio has released three movies every year from 2017 through to this year. So does that mean Marvel could change up the schedule and slot Blade in Phase Four somewhere?
That seems doubtful. Nothing is known about the movie except the title and the star. No writer or director has been announced, so it will probably be a while before that movie hits the ground running.
As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we’re pretty sure that’s coming in 2022. Gunn is also directing DC’s Suicide Squad sequel, due out in August of 2021. That almost certainly means Guardians will follow in 2022; Gunn has confirmed it will take place after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder.
Marvel is spinning many plates
Marvel Studios may be an even more well-oiled machine than we thought. Not only do they have five movies announced, with a sixth and seventh on the back burner, but they also have four series planned for Disney +. Those are Falcon and the Winter Soldier in the fall of 2020, Loki and WandaVision both in Spring 2021, What If for that Sumner and Hawkeye that fall.
That’s a ton. So given all that, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige held back on announcing Phase Five, even though it’s mapped out, as MovieWeb reported.
“We debated what we should announce today. Should we announce 4 and 5? We’ve planned them out, we’ve got five years down the road. And I was like, I think 11 projects in 2 years is plenty. Having not mentioned anything for two or three years,” Feige said.
So what else will be in Phase Five?
Besides Blade and Guardians Vol. 3, Marvel Phase Five will probably include Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2, which everyone knows are coming. A third Spider-Man MCU movie will be in there somewhere, since Spider-Man: Far From Home has some very loose ends to tie up. We also figure there has to be a Captain America movie with Sam (Anthony Mackie)
What else does that leave us? The next iteration of The Avengers. Speculation has it that the Young Avengers will be the title. Feige neither confirmed nor denied that, but he did promise we’ll see the Avengers again, although not quite as we have before.
“That’s what Endgame is all about. It will be a very different incarnation of the team, with some people you’ve already met and some people you haven’t met yet,” he said.
