What is La Revolution on Netflix about?
La Revolution on Netflix a re-imagining of the French Revolution.
The French revolution took place between 1789 and 1799, ending with the overthrow of the monarch and the establishment of a republic.
The French horror historical drama is told through the eyes of Joseph Guillotin.
Guillotin was a physician, politician and freemason. He was also a member of King Louis XVI’s States General assembly.

He was an advocate for capital punishment reform and believed all persons sentenced to death should meet their death by beheading, a privilege usually reserved for the upper classes.
The lower classes of society would be executed by hanging and being burned alive.
He proposed in October 1789 a device be used to carry out the death penalty to avoid painful executions.
Despite suggesting the use of a device, Guillotin did not invent the guillotine method and opposed the death penalty throughout his life.
In his later years, Guillotin distanced himself from capital punishment and worked in public health, most notably promoting the use of Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccination.
In La Revolution, there is a disease driving the aristocracy to murder the common people of France, which Guillotin tries to cure.
The eight-part series also reimagines Guillotin’s role in the revolution and other historical events.
The short synopsis for La Revolution reads: “Investigating a series of mysterious murders, Joseph Guillotin – future inventor of the guillotine – discovers the existence of a new virus: blue blood.
“The disease spreads within the aristocracy and pushes the nobility to attack the people. This is the start of a revolt … What if we had been lied to for more than two centuries? Here is the true story of the French Revolution…”
Is there a trailer for La Revolution?
Yes, a short trailer for La Revolution has been released by Netflix.
The short clip was released on July 14, 2020. The choice of date was deliberate as July 14th is the day the French celebrate Bastille Day.
Bastille Day marks the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a prison in the centre of Paris which symbolised despotism and fell to Parisian revolutionaries.
The trailer may not reveal very much about the upcoming series, but the clip is full of French historical and cultural references.
The words “Power to 99%. Death to 1%. The Revolution. October 2020.”
This refers to the historic transfer of power to the common man (99 percent) who revolted against the elite and eventually brought down the totalitarian monarchy of France, the one percent.
In the background of the entire trailer is a decapitated white marble head of a French aristocrat, with blue blood pouring out of its eyes and lips.
The colour blue is associated with the cloth used by the French army in the 18th century and is also the colour of the deadly virus in the series.
The decapitated head symbolises France’s infamous method of execution – the guillotine.
