Little Joe is a movie which certainly split critics and fans. Its star, Emily Beecham, won an award at the Cannes Film Festival for her acting prowess, beating some impeccable talent at that year’s ceremony. Here is everything you need to know about the movie as it is about to come out in cinemas.
When is Little Joe out in cinemas?
Little Joe was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019, similarly to Oscar Best Picture winner Parasite.
The movie then swept the festival circuit, playing at the London Film Festival on October 4, ahead of its first international release in Europe in November.
The movie will come out in the UK and Ireland on February 21.
Who is in the cast of Little Joe?
Emily Beecham plays Alice Woodard, a plant breeder and single mother, while Ben Whishaw plays Chris, Alice’s colleague.
Kerry Fox is Alice’s colleague Bella, while Kit Connor plays Joe Woodard, Alice’s son, and Lindsay Duncan plays a psychotherapist.
David Wilmot is Karl, and other supporting characters are played by Phenix Brossard, Sebastian Hulk, Leanne Best, Goran Kostic and Jason Cloud.

What is the plot of Little Joe?
The official synopsis from BFI reads: “Alice, a single mother, is a dedicated senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species.
“She has engineered a very special crimson flower, remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its therapeutic value: if kept at the ideal temperature, fed properly and spoken to regularly, this plant makes its owner happy.
“Against company policy, Alice takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe.
“They christen it ‘Little Joe’ but as it grows, so too does Alice’s suspicion that her new creations may not be as harmless as their nickname suggests.”

Alice engineers her happiness plant but soon notices some changes in her son, and one of her colleagues Chris.
What did critics think of Little Joe?
Critics were fairly divided, with it gaining a critics score on Rotten Tomatoes of 64 per cent, while the audience gave it a far worse movie, 35 per cent.
Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers said: “What if you bred a plant with the power to make people ‘happy’ – and its zombified fans would kill to protect it?
“You’d have Jessica Hausner’s mindbending ‘Little Joe’-a ‘Body Snatchers’ for the age of antidepressants.”
However, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw was not a fan, adding: “None of this is represented in any compelling dramatic style, and the actors – all very talented and assured – have perhaps not had clear enough direction.
“It is a mood piece. Whose mood leads nowhere.”
