Matthew McConaughey’s eldest child, Levi Alves McConaughey, was born back in 2008. Here’s the sweet story behind how The Dallas Buyers Club star’s son got his first name.
Matthew McConaughey describes Levi as ‘a good buddy’
Now that Levi is getting older, McConaughey says his son is becoming “a good buddy” of his. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he spoke about his relationship with his son and how much he has matured over the years.
“Levi is the most considerate person I’ve ever met,” says McConaughey. “He’s extremely considerate, and a very, very sensitive young man and really cares — really caring kid. And he, like me, has a very much perfectionist bone in him.”
McConaughey also says his son has great sales, debate, and storytelling skills. “He’s a great salesman, he’s a great debater, he’s a great storyteller, he’s becoming a really good storyteller. He’s becoming a good buddy of mine now as he’s reaching 12.”
How Matthew McConaughey’s son got his name
McConaughey says his eldest child was born at 6:22 p.m. on July 7, 2008. The time of day is significant to him because Matthew 6:22 is his favorite Bible verse, which says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”
McConaughey says this verse has given him “spiritual guidance” throughout the years. The verse means so much to him that he even commissioned two Dogon tribesmen to carve 6:22 into his bedroom door.
According to McConaughey, Matthew is called Levi in some parts of the world. This was a way for him to pass on part of his legacy to his child. He felt the name Levi was the perfect fit since it is linked to the name Matthew.
Camila Alves was in labor for 3 days
Camila Alves, McConaughey’s wife, says she labored for three days. She strongly desired to have a natural childbirth, so she tried her best to endure the pain for as long as she could.
During an interview with Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland on the show Lady Parts, Alves says at first the baby would look like he was about to come out, but then he would go back inside. She says McConaughey was there with her every step of the way, playing music to help her feel comfortable and keep her motivated.
Eventually, the doctor told Alves she would have to have an emergency C-section. She says she decided to surrender and give up her wish for a natural childbirth. She says she realized that not everything is in her control. For her, what matters most is the health and well-being of her children.
