Germany have claimed there is “unequivocal proof” that Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent. Chancellor Angela Merkel said he was a victim of attempted murder and the world would look to Russia for answers. BBC Berlin correspondent Jenny Hill explained why the rising tensions with Vladimir Putin could lead to Ms Merkel “put on ice” a joint plan.

Ms Hill told BBC Breakfast: “News of the poisoning puts Germany in bit of a bind as they have strong economic ties to Russia.

“Chancellor Merkel is now coming under pressure to put a Russia project on ice.

“The controversial Nord Stream project is a gas pipeline that would double Russian natural gas shipments to Germany.

“Despite the cost of shutting that down, it may be considered with tensions with Russia in Europe ratcheting up.”
