Footballing legend Michael Owen has issued a warning to Gemma Owen ’s fellow Love Islanders, as he opened up about what a “horror” his daughter can be when her mind is firmly fixed on the prize.
The 19 year old stunner has definitely followed in her father’s footsteps when it comes to embracing a competitive streak, with the international dressage rider almost insufferable once she “has her game face on.”
Fully embracing her competitive spirit, Gemma is a force to be reckoned with, with her doting dad admitting that people, including her fellow Love Islanders, need to “stay out of her way” once she sets her mind to something.
"Match day or if it’s a big competition, going into that ring, she turns into a horror. It’s like that’s it – you get your game face on and you can’t control it," he said.
Admitting he was much the same, Michael added: "I didn’t want anyone talking to me on match day. In fact, or the day before. Just stay out of my way and let me do my business."
He then went on to reveal that Gemma is exactly the same, and has adopted the England player’s in-it-to-win-it mentality.
He continued: “She’s the same, she’s horrible. Stay out of her way when a big competition’s coming round. That’s how much it means to you. Start focusing on the job in hand.”
An internationally renowned sportswoman in her own right, Gemma is no stranger to competition, as she frequently takes part in dressage tournaments around the globe.
The young star also recently opened up about her desire to follow in the footsteps of Kylie Jenner and become a billionaire businesswoman, with plans to expand her own swimwear line OG Beachwear on the back of appearing in the villa.
Yet Michael advises caution when it comes to competitiveness, after his own competitive streak very nearly cost him his marriage to wife Louise, after he retired from football.
Speaking in his Autobiography, Reboot, back in 2020, the former England player explained how retiring from the sport had led to serious ramifications in his personal life, with the star becoming enraged over everything, including his wife’s close relationship to their eldest daughter.
Michael wrote: “To my surprise, I found myself standing at a figurative cliff edge in 2014.
“A lifetime of that certain type of mentality, of behaviour, had led me to a point where I had to seek professional help.
“For years, because of my own inner demons, I was intentionally really hard on Louise about subjects that I knew would push her buttons most — not least her close relationship with our daughter Gemma.”
The dad of four then continued: “Let me be very clear and say that none of this was in any way a reflection on how I felt about either Gemma or Louise. I love them both with all of me.
“I’d take everything out on Louise, though. I’d accuse her of spending all her time with her eldest and ignoring the other kids.
“It wasn’t even true.”
