HOW I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has revealed he had major surgery to have trapped sea urchin spines removed from his infected hand.
The 46-year-old actor took to Instagram yesterday to explain his recent health woes and shared a slew of photos of his injury, including one of him in a hospital gown, with his 8.1million followers.
In the caption, the TV star explained that he injured his hand nearly two months ago while he and his family were on holiday in Croatia.
Recalling the nasty accident, Neil explained that he tripped and fell onto a sea urchin while "climbing rocky cliffs" in the European country.
Although he was able to get the majority out, the US star said that two of the urchin's spines remained in his hand and had in fact "pierced through a tendon".
He wrote alongside his post: "Had surgery today. I tripped and hand planted onto a sea urchin almost two months ago while climbing rocky cliffs in Croatia.
"Most of the tiny spines I dug out myself, but two refused to leave and one got infected. Turns out it pierced through a tendon (see ultrasound video).
"Well, thanks to the surgical talents of Dr. Dan Polatsch and his team, I'm officially urchin free and on the mend," he added.
However being on the "mend" means he’s left wearing a "hand elevating contraption for the foreseeable future" – but explained that he’s at least able to enjoy his favourite sushi.
He continued: "Only drawback – having to wear this massive hand elevating contraption for the foreseeable future. All in all, though, I have to say: uni is still delicious."
Before his surgery, the stage star, his husband David Burtka, and their 9-year-old twins Gideon and Harper enjoyed a sun-soaked European breakaway to France, Italy and Croatia during the summer.
Meanwhile, Neil became a household name in American playing child prodigy doctor Doogie Howser from 1989 to 1993.
But the actor was catapulted into global fame playing lovable Barney Stinson in beloved sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
