Viewers – and female campmates Josie Gibson and Danielle Harold – were shocked to see the 59-year-old strip off in the jungle shower but he claimed it was with good reason.
“The day before we went in, the doctor told us personal hygiene was really important,” said Nigel. “They said you really need to make sure you are clean, otherwise things will go wrong.
“The day I did it, it was lashing with rain. Leeches will crawl up your leg and embed themselves in the warmest part of your body.”
He added: “Sam did not shower naked and Sam did not check himself. Sam woke up one morning screaming. Sam had it on his a*** and the sleeping bag looked like a murder scene. The leech was huge.
“To be told to check yourself and to keep clean and then to be told you can’t take your pants off in the shower struck me as contradictory.
“I had a huge row. I was told in the interest of taste and in respect for the cameramen and women that I shouldn’t be doing this. I said, ‘Go to hell! I will check myself for leeches every day’.
“So there were very good reasons. Afterwards my campmates did the same. Four blokes stripped naked.”
