Work has started on Outlander season six with the cast already looking at the new scripts. Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan confirmed there was some activity taking place on the forthcoming series during a Twitter Q&A with fans. He teased: “A We have started… Ep 1!!! So excited. But you’re going to love the rest of this season.”

With this in mind, fans have already started speculating about what’s to come next in the series.

Season six is thought to be an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s novel A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

However, given the most recent run featured material from other books in the Outlander series, there’s nothing to suggest this won’t be the case again.

Also, in a recent interview author Gabaldon spoke briefly about season six and addressed whether fans could be seeing the controversial character of Malva Christie.

When asked about the appearance of Malva, Gabaldon told Town & Country Magazine: “I think I’m not allowed to talk about season six, is what I think.”

Her words don’t give anything away but there could clearly be scope to see the story of Malva playing out in a different way in the show – much like Claire’s abduction from An Echo in the Bone.

The show has made numerous changes in the past and particularly this year, a lot of things have been altered from The Fiery Cross.

Among some of the biggest changes have been Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix) still being alive.

Also, the Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) storyline plays out differently on screen compared to the original source material.

Who is Malva Christie in Outlander?

WARNING: This section contains spoilers from the Outlander novels and possible plot spoilers

In the book The Fiery Cross, Malva Christie is a young apprentice to Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) at Fraser’s Ridge.

She impresses Claire with her skills as she picks them up quickly from her teacher and becomes an adept healer, particularly with operations involving anaesthetic.

Claire almost sees Malva as a surrogate daughter, taking the young woman under her wing.

Sadly, their relationship turns sour when Malva falls pregnant and claims the baby’s father is Jamie.

To make matters, worse Malva poisons Claire during a dysentery epidemic sweeping in Fraser’s Ridge.

She hopes her crime will be concealed by the other deaths on the estate.

Luckily, Claire suspects foul play and confronts Malva before uncovering the truth.

Malva was hoping to murder Claire, so she could manipulate Jamie into taking care of her and the child.

Following an altercation between the two women, Malva winds up dead and Claire is thought to be killer.

Claire is spared as it emerges Malva was murdered by something else.

In the TV show, it seems Marsali Fraser (Lauren Lyle) is now Claire’s apprentice.

But there’s nothing to suggest the writers won’t incorporate this plot point into the TV series.

For now, it looks like anything could happen in season six and it seems highly likely there will be more divergences from the novels.
