'Stranger Things': Does the Cast Play Dungeons & Dragons in Real Life?

The game Dungeons & Dragons plays a big role in kicking off Stranger Things. The main characters are seen playing it and it shows how they deal with the supernatural. But this is the actor from the Netflix show who plays it in real life.

‘Stranger Things’ started with a Dungeons & Dragons game

The first time we see Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in the Netflix show is when they’re sitting at a table playing Dungeons & Dragons. It’s a fantasy roleplaying game where everyone creates their own character, then go on a fantasy adventure together. The game perfectly foreshadows what’s to come in season 1.

Mike tells them that something hungry for blood is coming. Dustin is worried that it will be the Demogorgon, but Lucas doesn’t believe him. The Demogorgon does come and the boys disagree on how to deal with it. They roll the dice and the Demogorgon gets Will.

Will does end up disappearing for most of the season because of the monster. Lucas is usually the skepitcal one while Dustin is quick to believe something supernatural is happening.

The game has continued to play a part in the show in future seasons. So fans might wonder if the cast members play it in real life.

The cast played the game for YouTube

The cast actually got together to play Dungeons and Dragons in real life recently. They went live on YouTube with Wizards of the Coast principal story designer Chris Perkins.

David Harbour (Jim Hopper) played with a character called Kenny Kaboom, who is a sorcerer with fire powers. Wolfhard played with a character named Sylvester the Wise who is half elf paladin who acts like a vigilante. Matarazzo played as half elf ranger Meryl Stroop, whose mission is to find a Yeti.

Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler) also participated in the game and made it known that it was her first time. Her character was a high elf named Jinx who fell into a life of crime, and is now on the run.

This isn’t the first time cast members have been seen playing Dungeons and Dragons. Wolfhard previously played the game with the band, PUP back in 2016. He acted as Dungeon Master for the group. The actor also shared that he’s been playing the game with his friends while being in quarantine.

There is now a roleplaying game for ‘Stranger Things’

The show has cashed in on its ties to the Dungeons & Dragons game. Hasbro has released a set that is inspired by the show.

The description for the game on Amazon reads, “Embark on an exciting Dungeons & Dragons adventure, hunt for the thessalhydra, and have hours of fun with the Adventure book created By the character Mike wheeler [sic].”

It looks like some of the cast members do enjoy playing it during their time off. While other cast members are still taking the opportunity to play it for the first time for fans.
