Strictly Come Dancing 2021 may have only just come to an end last month, but with the new year beginning it seems show bosses are already thinking about which celebrities they’d like to see in the next series. Comedian and presenter Mel Giedroyc was one of the stars who took to the iconic dance floor for the Christmas special of the hit BBC contest. She instantly impressed the judges and viewers at home with her moves and now producers are reportedly keen to sign her up for the 2022 series.

Mel was partnered up with Strictly Come Dancing professional Neil Jones for the festive special.

Together they performed a street dance inspired Couples Choice routine to Vanilla Ice’s hit track Ice Ice Baby.

It was singer Anne-Marie who won the Christmas special and lifted the coveted Glitterball Trophy, but it seems Mel also made an impact with fans.

A Strictly insider has claimed show bosses are now keen to sign the comedian up for the official 2022 series.

The source said: “They saw how popular she was and her performance surprised everyone.

“They’ve tried to get her to sign up before but really want her for next year’s show,” they told The Sun.

After watching Mel perform on the Christmas special, several viewers took to Twitter to request she join the cast of the next Strictly series.

“When can we have Mel Giedroyc on the main show, @bbcstrictly?! #Strictly,” @MatthewRimmer commented.

“Oh, I love Mel so much. Great pairing with Neil – they should have done a whole series together! #Strictly,” @littlenellie wrote.

“Who do we petition to get Mel Giedroyc to do a full series? #strictly #scd,” @CaptainGrammar questioned.

“Get Mel Giedroyc on the full series of #Strictly. She’d be amazing to watch,” @Z_PearsonTHFC said.

“GIVE ME A FULL SERIES OF MEL GIEDROYC #strictly,” @strictlyshippod posted.

@superTV247 added: “A full series of #Strictly with Mel Giedroyc would be absolutely WONDERFUL.”

Mel herself has confessed she may now be tempted to do a full series of Strictly after her experience in the Christmas special.

In a recent interview, the comedian explained she was previously against competing on the BBC dance show, but hinted she may have changed her mind.

“I’ve always thought Strictly’s a weird one for a woman in her 50s, because you’re too old to be a contender, unless you’re Debbie McGee, so it’s best to wait until you can do an [Ann] Widdecombe.

“But now I’ve dipped my large, middle-aged toe into the glitter, and maybe I feel differently,” Mel told the Telegraph.

If Mel does sign-up for the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing, she wouldn’t be the first star to graduate from a Christmas special.

Former EastEnders actress Maisie Smith won the festive edition in 2019 before joining the cast of the 2020 series.

Maisie impressed judges and the public, finishing as a runner-up to comedian Bill Bailey.

Strictly Come Dancing’s 2021 Christmas Special is available on BBC iPlayer now.
