The Masked Singer: Alien star Sophie Ellis-Bextor ‘didn’t have input’ over identity clues

Masked Singer: Sophie Ellis-Bextor is revealed as Alien

Alien was one of six characters who performed on The Masked Singer on Saturday evening, going up against Robin in the first head-to-head of the episode. Unfortunately, Sophie’s, 41, rendition of Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa didn’t win over the studio audience and therefore, her identity was at risk of being exposed. After the judges decided she would be the first celebrity to leave the ITV competition, the panel was shocked it was the chart-topper hidden inside the cosmic costume. However, it seemed the clue package team had done their job as no one guessed the mother-of-three had taken part.

Before Alien took to the stage for the first time, the clues giving a nod towards their real identity were given in a VT.

The quirky character said: “Greetings Earthlings, I am the Alien. I have travelled faster than the speed of light.

“From Space, Earth looks like a tiny toy and all the people on it look like tiny models,” they continued, with a mannequin then seen sporting a wedding dress.

“I have undertaken this independent exploration of your planet and my mission is to spread love, joy and glitter.

“Tonight, I hope the audience is ready for their first encounter with an Alien,” Sophie continued, but it seems she didn’t know which clues were going to be used to expose her.

Speaking of her time on the show, Sophie said of whether she had any choice of what clues were going to be used: “I didn’t have much input – it wasn’t needed.

“And my favourite clue alluded to one of my songs being played in EastEnders while the Queen Vic burned down. I didn’t even know!”

It seemed viewers at home knew exactly who Alien was as they took to Twitter to comment shortly after the character performed.

One fan wrote: “The alien sounds like Sophie Ellis-Bextor but throwing her voice in parts #MaskedSingerUK #MaskedSinger.”

Another added on the social media platform: “Alien equals Sophie Ellis Bextor? Murder on the dance floor – crime scene #MaskedSinger.”

Whilst a third commented: “Crime scene is murder on the dance floor. Sophie Ellis Bexter. She is a bit alien looking too. In a nice way. #maskedsinger.”

“Sophie Ellis Bextor is Alien for sure! #maskedsinger,” a fourth posted with a fifth sharing: “Alien is definitely Sophie Ellis Bexter #MaskedSinger.”

Asked why she decided to sign up, the chart-topper explained: “The craziness of the show! And getting the chance to try and sing sounding unlike me.”

“I love a challenge and why not do it dressed as an extraterrestrial?!” she said, before talking about keeping her participation a secret from her loved ones.

“Well it turns out most of my friends and family don’t ask me much about my job after all,” the singer joked.

“It was only down to my own willpower after that,” Sophie added, going on to say how she felt to leave the competition first.

“I left first so I felt like a gymnast who had a cool routine with jumps and twists, who then left after their first comedy somersault.”

Sophie said: “But it’s cool – I do my flips and jumps better with my own head-on,” and viewers took to Twitter to comment on the result.

One fan wrote: “Aah such a shame @SophieEB couldn’t continue, her voice is so unique and amazing. Love you Sophie! #maskedsinger.”

A second added: “I am the first one to score points in our house! I guessed right with Sophie Ellis Bexter #maskedsinger.”

Whilst a third posted: “Really tough first episode of #MaskedSinger – all were really good. Sorry lockdown Queen Sophie Ellis Bextor was the first to go. Not a clue on the others!”

The Masked Singer airs Saturdays at 7pm on ITV.
