THE Teacher viewers have blasted its ‘lazy, letdown ending’ after Sheridan Smith’s character did the unthinkable.
The Channel 5 drama concluded last night after airing across four consecutive nights.
Sheridan's character Jenna had pleaded guilty to sleeping with a minor after having no memory of what happened and not wishing to put her 15-year-old pupil Kyle through a trial.
However, it soon became clear Kyle had lied about what happened, and the final episode saw Jenna find out why.
Kyle had been manipulated by his tutor 'Brian', who was really one of Jenna's former co-workers at a different school, Arnold Cleary.
Fifteen years previously, Jenna had reported Arnold for grooming one of his pupils, leading to him being sent to prison and losing everything.
Since his release he had been planning revenge against Jenna, and as 'Brian' kept tabs on her via his partner – and Jenna's co-worker – Pauline.
But as the net closed in around Arnold, he texted Jenna from Pauline's phone to ask her to pop round, and the pair faced off against each other.

Arnold screamed at Jenna about everything that had happened, and continued to insist he had done nothing wrong, as he was waiting until the pupil he had groomed turned 16 before they had sex.
Jenna stood her ground and as the confrontation moved outside, Jenna told Arnold she wouldn't wallow in what had happened to her like he had, and instead she would go on and live her life.
Arnold then threw himself under a passing truck and was killed, while Jenna went on to have her name cleared and ready to move on with her life, while leaving things amicable with those around her.
'DISAPPOINTING'
However viewers were not impressed by the ending, with one writing on Twitter: "Lazy ending – Couldn’t be bothered to finish the story."
Another added: "It’s as though they sort of run out of ideas and had to rush the ending. Disappointing #TheTeacher."
A third tweeted: "Another awful ending. I'm so fed up of these dramas.
Even I invented better endings than that, there were so many possibilities for it to all tie up! Terrible, boring let down."
Meanwhile a fourth agreed, writing: "#TheTeacher very poor unrealistic ending."
