LIFE in the zombie apocalypse would turn anyone to bad habits – but fans of The Walking Dead have noted something amiss with Daryl Nixon’s penchant for smoking.
The lone wolf, played by Norman Reedus, is known for his love of cigarettes and has been spotted with one hanging out of his mouth since debuting on the drama.
However, considering the show is now a full decade into the fall of civilisation, viewers are beginning to wonder where exactly Daryl is getting his tobacco fix from.
A group of fans took to Reddit to call out show bosses for overlooking how difficulty it would be to obtain a constant stream of cigarettes considering widespread production has ground to a halt.
User Shocklax began: “If I remember correctly from the mid-season finale, Daryl smokes what looks to be a homemade cigarette or cigar.
“Because we’re now about 10 years into the apocalypse, I’d assume that all store bought cigs should be expired and thus the only way to get them would be to grow the tobacco personally.”
They went on to speculate that the allied communities must be producing their own tobacco – a controversial use of precious farming space, considering that food is in short supply.
“If this is true, does that mean Alexandria or Hilltop have a tobacco farm?” they went on.
“They’re in Virginia so it would be the right climate to have one but still, in a time where resources are hard to come by, it seems like a strange thing to put any effort into.”
However, others felt that investing in tobacco didn’t have to mean neglecting conventional crops.
V_Niloticus replied: “It really isn’t all that unreasonable, surely there are a number of tobacco users amongst the community and it really doesn’t take that much time away from general planting.
“It wouldn’t take up any resources for the other crops, you use the same tools, sun and water.
“I imagine they aren’t growing acres of it, just a handful of plants for the people who want to smoke.”
However, others claimed that Daryl wasn’t smoking tobacco at all, but rather, marijuana.
Gaffer_Gamgee chimed in: “Daryl grows his own weed. You can see it hanging from the ceiling of his Alexandra pad where he is drying it, if you look out.”
It’s true that back in season 6, episode 12, Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) comes across a room full of marijuana plants, so clearly the drug is popular among some of the survivors.
However, given the escalation of the war with The Whisperers, it’s fair to say that making roll-ups porbably shouldn’t be at the top of the allies communities’ priorities.
The furore comes after the trailer for the second half of season 10 sparked widespread speculation about upcoming story-lines.
These include Rosita and Eugene embarking on a romance, baby Coco being abducted and an Alexandrian rising from the dead.
The Walking Dead will air on FOX in the UK on February 24 and be available to stream on NOW TV.
