Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been one of The Walking Dead’s most popular characters in recent years. After being introduced in the AMC series as the murderous and callous leader of the Saviours, Negan has transformed into a pivotal and trustworthy figure to the likes of Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus). And now, fans will get to delve into the character’s history with a familiar face joining Morgan onscreen.
Morgan’s wife Hilarie Burton has been cast as Negan’s late wife Lucille.
AMC confirmed the casting news to Entertainment Tonight with spin-off show World Beyond also announcing the news via Twitter.
The account tweeted: “NEWS: Hilarie Burton Morgan (@HilarieBurton) has joined the cast of #TheWalkingDead in a guest starring role as Negan’s wife Lucille for the bonus episodes of Season 10! #TWDFamily.”
And it didn’t take long for The Walking Dead fans to weigh in with their thoughts on the casting and prospect of a Negan backstory episode.
“The queen is coming to save the Negan backstory,” weighed in one TWD fan.
A second echoed: “This is fantastic news. Perfect casting. Great to see they’re going to explore Negan’s backstory, I’ve been wanting to see that.
“Plus it solves some of the potential issues with social distancing and covid safety. So it’s a win win all round. Congrats @HilarieBurton.”
While a third agreed: “Very excited to finally see Negan’s back story, it’s about time they gave him one.
“He definitely deserves it, plus sharing it with his lonely wife is gonna be quite exciting to watch!!!”
And a fourth added: “Yes! So pumped for this! Can’t wait for the back story! @JDMorgan you rock man! I’m sure your wife will rock the part also!”
When exactly fans will get to see Negan and Lucille’s tale play out on-screen is currently unknown but it’s billed for one of the bonus episodes of the extended season 10.
And Burton’s arrival isn’t the only piece of casting news which has got TWD fans everywhere talking as rumours of Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) return to the universe have been bandied about online recently.

Shortly after the fourth episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, the show’s post-credits scene hinted at Rick’s reintroduction to the TWD world.
And eagle-eyed fans had spotted that Lincoln had been credited with an appearance in the first season’s finale one popular movie site IMDb.
However, a spokesperson for AMC has seemingly put these rumours to bed.
They told Insider that Lincoln’s listing in the season one, episode 10 cast list was “not accurate”.
But could this be a red herring to hide an almighty Rick return in the TWD universe?
Whether it’s in World Beyond or not, The Walking Dead fans definitely haven’t seen the last of Rick.
After all, the big-screen spin-off movies based on the character are still going ahead, despite complications presented by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC in 2021.
