While The Mandalorian held a lot of nostalgia and connections to past Star Wars films and movies, it focused on new characters. Which is great! Not only did it introduce Mando and Baby Yoda, but it also included former Rebel Cara Dune and the Ugnaught Kuiil. Basically, it was a new take on the Star Wars universe and created stories outside of the Jedi vs. Sith narrative we see so often. And in the season finale for The Mandalorian, a new tidbit was revealed about Cara Dune. There’s more to her than we know. Spoilers for The Mandalorian finale ahead.
Moff Gideon revealed part of Cara Dune’s past
While Mando, Cara, and Greef Karga were trying to dupe the Client out of searching for the Child, they were all bombarded by Moff Gideon and his much larger battalion of Stormtroopers. While he was setting up an E-Web blaster cannon, Moff Gideon taunted them with knowledge about their pasts. For Cara, he called her by her full name, Carasynthia Dune, and knew she was a Republican shock trooper. Because of this, she’s probably seen her fellow troops “vaporized mid-descent” by a similar weapon.
He also calls out that she’s from Alderaan, aka Princess Leia’s planet. It was, of course, completely destroyed along with everyone on it by Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope. And it was home to former Senator Bail Organa, seen heavily in the prequels and The Clone Wars. He was a Jedi and Rebel sympathizer after Emperor Palpatine took over in Revenge of the Sith. Which explains why Leia was so attached to the cause (in addition to, you know, the Sith destroying her planet).
She was a Rebel shock trooper
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Dec. 3, Gina Carano talked about what made her strength a bit different from Leia Organa’s. “I definitely think Cara stands out in a way that’s very different from someone like Leia, who’s also very strong and independent,” she said. “I think that’s exactly what Jon wanted to bring to the Star Wars universe as far as my character. He wanted my arms to show… He wanted my character to be this new soldier of women, and he wanted her to have an impact. For me, it’s been a way to embrace who I am, and if the biggest complaint is that I’m too strong, it’s really a compliment to me.”
In addition to her origin of Alderaan, she was a Rebel shock trooper in the Galactic Civil War, as Moff Gideon pointed out. That’s the war we see start with Rogue One, which was already brewing thanks to the Empire’s complete totalitarian rule over the galaxy. It ended not much long after the Battle of Endor seen in Return of the Jedi. A major sign of her commitment to the Rebellion is the tattoo on Cara’s face. “The eye tattoo has a much deeper meaning once we get into it,” Carano said. “Obviously, it’s a Rebel tattoo, but there’s much more to that story.”
Cara’s still hiding a big secret

Speaking of the “more” to Cara, there still seems to be a major secret to her backstory. Granted, fans don’t know much about her, except that she was “forced into early retirement” and feared Mando was hunting her for bounty. Carano said that she knows the full story, but was only given bits and pieces by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni who wrote the script. “They withhold little bits and pieces from me, and they’ll come in and say, ‘Oh, yeah, also this…’”
And there’s more. “Before I did the introductory scene, Jon told me a secret about my character, and it added so much depth to what her life has been like,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think she’s a really cool character, and I think the sky’s the limit with telling her story. When I read the script, I just felt like Jon wrote a little diamond of a character. I’ve been waiting for something like this for so long, and I love putting on the armor and thinking about the possibilities.”
Thankfully, The Mandalorian will live to see another day with Season 2 premiering in Fall 2020. Maybe we’ll get the full look at Cara’s past next season.
