Good Karma Hospital is back on screens with its fourth series following the adventures of staff and patients at the fictional Indian hospital. British actress Raquel Cassidy has joined the cast for the new series, but has revealed her filming experience wasn’t always easy. While ITV’s Good Karma Hospital is set in tropical Southern India, it is largely filmed in Sri Lanka. Newcomer Raquel has spoken out about the challenges of making the show in the exotic location.
Chatting exclusively to Express.co.uk, Raquel shared her experience of filming on the island.
The actress insisted the picturesque locations were “beautiful”, but the nature that surrounded them often caused problems for the production team.
“The locations themselves were spectacular,” Raquel remarked.
However, she recalled a number of occasions when the elements of the island disrupted scenes.
The actress insisted the locations were “not exactly treacherous”, but nonetheless caused issues.
“We had sandbags and we had people sort of grabbing everything and running away from the sea, that wasn’t respecting where we decided to set things,” she said.
“I also had to re-voice an awful lot of it because the sea wouldn’t shut up,” she laughed.
Raquel also recalled the camera crew struggling with a scene that’s set to feature in the upcoming episode four.
Setting the scene, she explained: “Bobby’s sitting on the bow of a tree, a branch of a tree that is hanging over the sea.
“In order to get his close up the camera department actually had to be in the sea and they were crotch deep, you know, it got up to their hips.
“The sea was coming in and luckily the camera was on sticks, but it was covered by plastic all apart from the lens.
“They were desperately trying to get the take before everything got washed away.
“So, it had its ups and its downs, but it was never never less than exciting,” she added.
The star also noted that coronavirus restrictions posed an additional challenge and meant that in her free time she wasn’t able to explore the island.
“I couldn’t actually explore,” Raquel explained. “Obviously when you’re on lockdown you’re not allowed to really, beyond the hotel.”
However, she noted that the lockdown experience wasn’t all bad as the cast and crew formed a “family”.
“We lived in a small hotel which turned into a little bit like a family home with lots of different bedrooms.
“I mean even the hotel staff felt like family by the end of it,” she added.
Looking back fondly on the experience, she enthused: “It was very, very sweet.”
The Good Karma Hospital airs Sundays at 8pm on ITV.
