After the shocking season two finale, which saw bar owner Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) shot by an anonymous gunman, viewers are patiently waiting for updates on which of their beloved characters will return to the small town in season three. However, actor Tim Matheson, who plays lovely physician Doc Mullins, dropped a few hints about Hope McCrae (Annette O’Toole).

Netflix’s hit romantic drama released the official trailer for the highly-anticipated season three of Virgin River.

The series, based on the Virgin River series of novels by Robyn Carr, follows the journey of Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and fans have loved every second of her budding romance with bar owner Jack.

In the season two finale Jack was shot but, judging by the trailer, he survives much to viewers’ delight.

Jack and Mel aren’t the only adorable couple in Virgin River though, as Doc and mayor Hope got together again.

However, in the trailer, Hope’s absence was particularly notable leaving fans concerned.

In a recent interview with News Nation Now, actor Tim dropped some hints about Doc and Hope’s future.

He said: “Hope McCrae, my significant other, is off visiting her aunt in a very dangerous situation.

“I play Doc Mullins, and I’m very concerned and worried about her.”

In season two, Hope suffered a mild heart attack but, thankfully, she appeared to have fully recovered.

However, Matheson’s latest interview has hinted she could still possibly be sick and has not made a full recovery as viewers were led to believe.

It was an emotional rollercoaster for the couple in season two, as the former husband and wife struggled to get back together.

Hope briefly left Doc after her heart attack as she needed to reevaluate her life after her major health scare.

Though, the two quickly rekindled their relationship when Hope realised she still loves Doc.

Hope’s health scare won’t be the only thing the two have to contend with as Doc was trying to tell her something serious about himself in the season two finale.

Unfortunately, the two were interrupted by friends and Hope still doesn’t know what he had to say.

In the new season three trailer, Doc reveals to his colleague Mel he is “going blind” so audiences can assume this was the major news he had to tell Hope.

However, Matheson’s hint at a “dangerous situation” for Hope could mean he discovers that she is still ill but Hope is as yet unaware of her condition. Will going to her aunt’s lead to another heart attack?

Showrunner Sue Tenney spoke to TV Line recently about Doc’s future, saying: “Doc has some stuff going on [next] season.

“A complication that will challenge him and will challenge his relationship with Hope,” she continued.

“He’s going to rise to the challenge, but it is a real complication for him, especially for him practicing medicine going forward.”

Will Hope’s ill health put added pressure on the beloved physician, or will Hope be the one taking care of Doc as his eyesight starts to fade?

Virgin River seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.
