[This article contains spoilers for Virgin River Season 2]
Um, talk about a cliffhanger. Season 2 of Virgin River ended on a very dramatic — and unresolved note — that has fans desperate to learn what happened to a key character in the Netflix drama.
To recap: The Virgin River Season 2 concluded with Jack (Martin Henderson) getting shot. His love interest Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) discovers him bleeding out on the floor of his bar. Fans are hoping she got there in time to save him. But the episode ended without revealing Jack’s fate or the identity of the person who shot him. And that wasn’t the only up-in-the-air storyline at the season’s end. Viewers were also left hanging when it came to the news Doc (Tim Matheson) was about to reveal to Hope (Annette O’Toole) about his health. Plus, we don’t know if Preacher (Colin Lawrence) decides to stay in Virgin River or move to San Francisco.
So far, there’s no word on ‘Virgin River’ Season 3
The most recent season of Virgin River certainly ended in a way that sets things up for another season. Unfortunately for fans, Netflix hasn’t confirmed if season 3 is happening. But that’s not necessarily a reason to panic. The streaming service often waits a couple of weeks after a new season is released before announcing a renewal. Virgin River Season 2 premiered on Nov. 27, so it’s possible there will be good news for fans soon.
‘Virgin River’ star Martin Henderson weighed in on a possible season 3
While Virgin River season 3 hasn’t officially been given the green light (that we know of), series star Henderson indicated in an interview with TVLine that he expects the show to continue.
The actor called the cliffhanger a “nice, dramatic end to a season that leaves a lot of unanswered questions. If we haven’t done it with our performances up to that point, hopefully [this mystery] will go some ways to keep people tuned in for season 3.”
Henderson also offered up a theory about the identity of the shooter.
“Who on Earth would have done that? By the end of the season, there are a few candidates,” he said. “I always joke that it’s most likely Charmaine,” he added, referring to Jack’s ex-girlfriend (and the mother of his unborn twins), played by Lauren Hammersley. “It does pop into your mind!”
Another possible culprit? Someone associated with Calvin and his illegal narcotics operation.
Alexandra Breckenridge hints that Jack will survive
Jack’s fate was hanging in the balance when the season 2 credits rolled. But there’s a good chance he’s going to survive, Breckenridge told Entertainment Tonight. Having Mel lose Jack “would be weird because then you’ll have to watch [her] go through what she did in season 1 all over again.”
“It would be so tragic, especially for me,” the actor added. “I don’t want to have to relive that stuff anymore. I think they’re all in at the end of season 2.”
Assuming there is another season of Virgin River, solving the mystery of who had it out for Virgin River’s beloved bar owner will be an important storyline, showrunner Sue Tenney told TVLine. Future episodes will “go through trying to figure out who shot Jack,” she said, adding that unraveling the whodunit could play out “over several seasons.”
