Female superstars including Jennifer Lopez, Cate Blanchett, Ellen Pompeo and Gwen Stefani all turn 50 this year. Film actress and former Friends star Jennifer Aniston had the milestone birthday in February and recently spoke on the stereotype of women getting older, saying she feels “incredible.”
‘The Morning Show’
Aniston has partnered with Reese Witherspoon for their upcoming Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. Aniston and Witherspoon both serve as executive producers and take on starring roles in the show. According to People, Aniston portrays Alex Levy, a news anchor who gets broadsided when her work and life partner Mitch Kessler, played by Steve Carell, is fired for sexual misconduct. The show also features Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Billy Crudup, Néstor Carbonell, and Mark Duplass.
Aniston said she based her role on legendary news anchorDiane Sawyer. “I’ve known Diane for years, and I had the joy of getting to pickher brain when I was doing research for the show,” Aniston said. “Diane’salways been so elegant and classy.”
The series provides a behind-the-scenes look at television news, as well as gender inequality, and personality clashes in journalism. “What it takes to pull off a morning show, the unique lifestyle of these anchors, the obsession with celebrity culture, and humanity in the midst of corruption,” Aniston said regarding the show, according to People. “Plus we’re addressing the ugly truths of how men have treated women in our society, particularly in the workplace, for all these years. We’re looking at the ways in which we’ve all normalized this behavior and how we’re all by-products of our environment, having grown up with sexism encoded in our messaging, however extreme or subtle.”
Referring to the #MeToo movement, Aniston commented on how her new show reflects the societal changes that have been taking place since the downfall of film mogul Harvey Weinstein. “There’s a new playbook that’s being written in real time, and this show looks at how we’re finally taking steps to acknowledge and dismantle the old, dysfunctional ways of doing business so we can level the playing field,” she shared.
Turning 50
Aniston turned 50 on February 11. She recently shared with InStyle how she thinks the language around the landmark number needs to change. “Fifty was the first time I thought, ‘Well, that number,’” Aniston said in the interview. “I don’t know what it is because I don’t feel any different. Things aren’t shutting down in any way. I feel physically incredible. So it’s weird that it’s all of a sudden getting telegraphed in a way that’s like, ‘You look amazing for your age.’ I think we need to establish some etiquette around that dialogue and verbiage.”
Though the actress hasn’t planned on doing anything drastic to sustain her youthful looks, she will maintain her hair color. “I’m not gonna lie — I don’t want gray hair,” Aniston said.
She revealed that what she feels the most at this age is power. “Women were never allowed to have power,” she told InStyle. “Power feels sexy to me today, as does women’s intelligence and how capable and creative they are.”
Birthday bash
Aniston threw a star-studded celebration for her milestone at Sunset Tower in Los Angeles a few days ahead of her birthday. The guest list included A-list celebs such as Courtney Cox, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, George Clooney and Amal Clooney, Lisa Kudrow, Robert Downey Jr., Laura Dern, Kate Hudson and Demi Moore.
The actress apparently still considers her exes her friends. Ex-husband Brad Pitt made an appearance at the party, as well as ex-boyfriend John Mayer. Though Aniston enforced a ‘no social media’ rule at her party, actresses Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow playfully rebelled by sneaking in some pics that they posted the following day, according to Elle.
The Morning Show premieres on Apple TV+ in November.
