Though Avengers: Endgame has come and gone, the recent DVD release has fans revisiting the ultimate conclusion to the MCU’s epic saga once more. Avengers: Endgame was an emotionally impactful joyride infused with walks down memory lane — as we traveled through the past — humorous fight sequences, and some of the most memorable dialogue (and monologues) the franchise has ever seen. We finally got to hear Cap utter the words, “Avengers, Assemble.” If that’s not some movie magic, what is?
Endgame has raised the bar so high for the superhero realm that most believe another film at its level may never reach the silver screen; however, we have faith in Marvel to continue defying our expectations. All ready for Avengers 5 yet?
As we prep for the future of phase 4, and the power Disney+ is bound to usurp from current streaming platforms, it’s bittersweet to reminisce. From Robert Downey Jr’s satisfying sacrifice as Iron Man to Captain America’s saddening, yet appropriate, conclusion, Avengers: Endgame was a near-perfect film. However, MCU fans were not thrilled with all aspects of the box-office triumph. One facet, in particular, seemed to bother more than a stray fan.
Many fans were not happy with Captain Marvel’s apparent superiority and forced relevance in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
Avengers: Endgame was the highly-anticipated final installment; meaning, many fans felt that the Original six — Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, and Thor — should have been the focal point and the film’s most celebrated individuals…to an unwavering fault. As a result, some MCU enthusiasts argue that Captain Marvel retained too much power and influence; the film’s persistence that she was unparalleled in strength felt forced and out of place. One MCU fan focused on a specific scene recreation, stating:
When they recreated the scene with Captain Marvel pushing back the Gauntlet as Cap had tried to do in I.W. Just totally going “this is the new hero and you need to love them look they are stronger than Cap”. Actually her entire presence in Endgame felt forced.
Other fans chimed in to support the above comment, agreeing that such decisions were too in the face. One Avengers: Endgame viewer noted her takeover of pivotal moments, arguing:
…Captain Marvel butted in on the fight over the gauntlet at the end. It was supposed to be a fight between Thanos and the original three, and she just comes in and has literally no issue holding him back until he has to use the power stone. Thanos could b*tch slap hulk easily and throw Thor around like a child, but it takes the cosmic power of an infinity stone to beat Captain Marvel. Really cheapened the other three, making them feel almost useless.
In short, many fans argued that Captain Marvel’s powers, due to the sheer excess in which they were illustrated, awarded her too much attention, seizing the spotlight from the Avengers who have been with the franchise since the beginning. On the other hand, Captain Marvel fans argue that the extent of her powers warranted her relevance to the plot trajectory.
