Amy James-Kelly is a well-known actress who has previously starred in Safe and Gentleman Jack. Her breakthrough role was as Maddie Heath in the popular soap, Coronation Street. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about why she left the series.

Why did Amy James-Kelly leave Coronation Street?

Amy James-Kelly is a 25-year-old actress who has just taken on a new role in the emotional BBC drama, Three Families.

The star is on Instagram and she has been sharing plenty of photos from the new series, along with a poignant message.

She said: “This two-parter, I hope, will shine a light on how very real these events are, and show that for circumstances shrouded in judgement, we actually cannot begin to imagine what it’s like – every story is different.

“Compassion is always going to be the key word for me in regards to the themes and the drama as a whole. I hope the response is a conversation. Ending ultimately in compassion.”

Fans have praised the star for her latest venture, but they will always remember her as Maddie from Coronation Street.

The star left the series in February 2015, and it was her own decision to make the move. On leaving, she said in a statement: “I made the decision to leave because I’m young and adventurous, and I want to gain more experience and explore and improve my craft. Acting is my passion and I’m excited to see where it takes me.”

With this in mind, the young star had plenty of other goals in mind and she has definitely kept herself busy.

Since leaving Corrie, she went on to star in Jericho, Moving On and Military Wives.

In early 2021, she took on the role of Grace Marshbrook in the popular ITV crime drama The Bay.

She still shares throwbacks from her time on Corrie on social media, saying: “#BehindTheScenes at the #MiniBusCrash storyline on #Corrie – a long and cold shoot but it was such an amazing experience because I’d never worked with a green (blue) screen before and the stunts were so cool to be a part of.”

Speaking about her latest venture in Three Families, one fan said: “Bawled at the trailer, can’t wait to watch! So much admiration and respect for the roles you take on.”

The star shared a photo of her character, Hannah, with co-star Colin Morgan as partner Jonathan.

The pair are seen sitting together in a waiting room, and they are both looking very nervous.

James-Kelly shared a description of the images on her Instagram account, saying: “Amy and Colin playing Hannah and Jonathan in a hospital waiting room, staring fearfully at the doctor’s door, waiting for news which they fear is bad.

“Image 2: Amy as Hannah presenting to MPs about her experiences, hoping to change the law. Image 3: Amy as Hannah looks defeated and heartbroken as she receives yet more bad news.”

Three Families dramatises real-life stories from mothers in Northern Ireland before abortion laws changed.

The synopsis says: “Young newlyweds Hannah and Jonathan are devastated when they learn that their much-wanted baby will not survive the pregnancy.

“In their grief, the couple speak to their doctor about their options, only to realise how limited their choices are.”

In the series, names and details have been changed to ensure the anonymity of the real-life contributors.

Viewers continued to praise the young actress for her portrayal of Hannah, with one saying: “Hannah looks lovely. Looking forward seeing the series, I know it’s gonna be devastating but also needed.”
